During an assault on Taras Nabad by the forces of Hell, the Seraphim submitted the Doom Slayer to the rite of the Divinity Machine, which, for unknown reasons, caused him to gain unnatural strength and speed. With this strength, he was able to fight back the hordes of Hell and save Taras Nabad for the time being. The Khan Maykr later let it be known that the Slayer was a holy being, sent to bring the teachings of the Maykrs to the wicked.
Divinity machine contained a bit of Davoth's (Dark lords) power. It was made to test sentinel warriors by the khan makyr. As she was tricked into thinking that "Someone will arrise in the future who will overthrow her", it was callibrated to kill the participant, however, the power of the machine was reversable, to give someone great power (The part of power taken away from Davoth, that was stored here - as the rest was taken by VEGA aka "Father"). Seraphim (Samuel Hayden) reversed the machine, to give the slayer said power.
This not only explains some of the feats the slayer was able to do, but also explains why Davoth - once awakened was mortal and weakened to a point Doom guy could take him out. Not only that, but the death of the Dark lord, and Slayer losing his consiousness at the end is explained by this part of davoth dying and leaving his body. Which means that while not dead - the slayer is severely weakened aswell now. Which should somewhat lower his power level if a new game comes out with our favourite slayer as the main character again.
Also keep in mind - I am not sure if Hugo ever fully confirmed that Doom guy is a primevil. The codex says: Only a primeval or something stronger can kill a primeval (Which davoth was), yet we know, that davoth is not who he used to be. He is weak now, he is mortal, with his power split between VEGA, The slayer and himself. Not to mention that reviving somebody from a soulsphere is an extremely painful procedure, that probably also made him weaker. We didn't fight him at his full power. We fought a shadow of what he truly was.
Yeah, pretty much this.
It was time for the Doomguy to grow up and become the Doomslayer, and the Divinity Machine did just that for him.
Explains why he's able to just casually glory kill demons for health without a berserk pack.
