Wait so do they really never explain what happens between Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal?
I mean, you don't play Doom for the story, but there *is* a story, I would at least like it to be coherent. Where did the slayer go? What happened with Dr. Sam? When did demons invade earth again? How did the slayer revive Vega on the new ship without such an elaborate cooling system? WHAT IS HAPPENING!?!?!?

We don't have the timeline, but this is the crudely explained and spoiler heavy run-down of what happened after 2016:
  • Hayden stows slayer away somewhere we don't know so he can't interfere with his plan to use the crucible to save earth. Has good intentions but the Slayer would not have let it happen.

  • Hayden uses the demonic crucible to make argent energy synthetically. This was actually his main goal all along, with the Argent Tower and wraith power from The Well he perfected the method without needing to genocide worlds like the Khan Maykr did. The crucible let him continue after the tower was destroyed since it has the wraith energy from The Well absorbed inside of it.

  • Earth is attacked by demons, but since Hayden already knew this would happen he forms the ARC and uses the crucible as their main weapon. He acts like the savior of Earth from this point on because he has a god complex and the Father isn't around anymore to keep him in line. Probably part of the reason why he stowed the slayer - he wants the credit.

  • Hayden leads the war against hell for a while but then suffers from a massive skill issue and gets torn in half in combat. Humanity continues to get rekt, billions die etc. He probably activates the Slayer once he realized he failed, as the people at the ARC complex expected him to show up.

  • The Slayer eventually reclaims his sentinel command station, he then uses it to warp back to earth and clean up hayden's mess again. Since the fortress uses maykr tech, Vega is seamlessly integrated into it as he is also maykr tech

So really it is just a bunch of boring ♥♥♥♥ that doesn't make sense without the TAG context which explains why the Seraphim planted himself on Earth. The father gave him a mission to protect Earth but he sort of became a rogue butler instead when VEGA forgot that he is god. Makes sense that they time skipped to the main action, but they really should have come through with that comic.

I play doom for the story

Parts of it are explained in the Codex, and some aren’t hard to figure out on your own. Like, your ship/fortress is based on Maykr technology, and Maykrs are a very advanced race of space aliens. Their computers are much more sophisticated and can run VEGA without needing an entire ice cap.

Why? Not a single one of them has a good story.

As to why, they wanted to start the game with a cool “Hell on Earth” opening where you immediately leap into action and after a short and frankly boring trip through some corridors you fall out of the Hell barge and see gorgeously devastated and thoroughly hellified city. The story exists to serve gameplay and visuals, not the other way round. There was supposed to be a comic bridging the stories of 2016 and Eternal, but it didn’t work out. Just use your imagination, I guess.

Did you not read the readme that came with doom 1? Or the comic or novel?
Sar Mar 18 @ 1:12pm
I even read the freaking novel, at least some of them. I remember the demons being actually space aliens who imitated demons as a form of psychological warfare. And the second one had Mormons, didn’t it? Not what I would call a good story.

the events between d2016 and eternal were supposed to be explained in a comic. which was cancelled. fun fact, its cancellation was announced after Tyler McVicker interviewed Hugo. another fun fact, every project that Tyler has interviewed devs on has been cancelled. every single project, without exception and fail. it almost seems like every game project that Tyler comes into contact with gets cancelled. and this isnt hyperbole, it's legit every single ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ project whose devs this guy has interviewed. every single ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ one.

and since the comic was cancelled, we will never, and that's no exaggeration, know what happened inbetween.

1. Where did the slayer go?
Probably to kill more demons somewhere and get a huge space fortress of doom of course.
Where he got it? From some space place, probably with many many demons.

2. What happened with Dr. Sam?
That's kind of "explained" in game.
He tried to become supreme ruler of earth and demons turned him into scrap metal when they invaded. It's a bigger plot hole than the "plot" if you think about it for a moment, but it's DOOM: kill demons, story is in other games.

3. When did demons invade earth again?
Some time after D16.
Or you mean why? Because they want soul energy or whatever. Or an explanation that makes more sense, because doom slayer needs more demons to kill, Mars ran dry.

4. How did the slayer revive Vega on the new ship without such an elaborate cooling system?
The space fortress that runs on alien technology makes Vega cool again.
But really, in D16 the cooling thing was another excuse to kill more demons as Vega never really needed it as it turns out later, imposing as number 1 but really being number 2. Sneaky bastard.

The space fortress is apparently a standard Sentinel space vehicle, you see a bunch of them in the first TDA trailer.
Clearly someone was not paying attention as almost all of your points are either explained via codex or found simply through playing the game and paying attention.
It's just a dream.
