Don't be too surprised they recycle design concepts that are pretty common.

Doom 3 gets a lot of flak for focusing on tech over gameplay, while Half-Life 2 severely underdelivered in the AI department. Combine weren't (still aren't) even half as smart as early E3 demos, and I'd say even dumber than HL1 marines.
Physics gameplay and the pure feeling of a varied exciting adventure drives HL2, but to me Doom 3 is also a great example of one hell of an adventure.
Guess so. I love how Eternal is a love letter to pretty much all prior Doom games.
You can still refresher that memory today. Doom 3 still looks fantastic with mods (apart from human character models, but there aren't that many), and if you treat it like Half-Life 1 with demons, you're in for one hell of a ride.
