Controller Issues

I've been having an annoying controller issue with Doom Eternal. I've tried doing some searching online and it seems other people have too, but I can't find a way to consistently fix it.

Randomly while playing, the game will stop recognizing the full travel on the axis 1 - that's up and down on the left stick. To understand what I mean, you can use this website to check your controller: https://hardwaretester.com/gamepad

My axis 1 consistently gets set to about +1.0 to -0.75 meaning I can only get about 75% of my max backwards movement (down on left stick). It's always only the left stick and it's always 75% on down.

No, it's not a dirty controller or drift problem - My controller works fine on any other game. Also, I can easily fix the controller issue by turning off Doom and the controller, then turning them both back on again.

Has anyone else had this same issue?

FYI - I'm using a KingKong Pro 2 controller (has hall effect sensors on the sticks) and not an xbox controller, though Steam and the game treat it like a xbox controller.

I know that this was not your question, but you really use a gamepad to play a FPS?
I strongly recommend using mouse and keyboard!

You know, I never thought about that before, but your comment made me re-evaluate my choice to use a controller. Thank you for your service.

You are welcome. Seriously, I play FPS since Quake (1) was released back in 1996 and started a bit later with QW online. I would have never even thought about playing a first person shooter with joystick or gamepad. Your aim is terrible with a gamepad and much more precise with a mouse, unless the game gives you auto aim or aim lock etc. If you play online, you will certainly lose every single game, when playing gamepad vs. mouse & keyboard.

I think they were sarcastic. But seriously, while I prefer mouse and keyboard, there are insanely good controller players of this game out there. There's controller quick swaps for example, the other one's named Buckio I think and then there is the guy SMVR (or similar) who does insane stuff in many games including this one.

I think the main reason this game is better with mkb isn't aiming, some people are very good aimers with a controller, but the many keys for keybinds. But even that doesn't hinder the guys I mentioned from excelling. You don't even see the weapon wheel when they are swapping weapons, they are just that fast.

That may be true, but even a fairly good player with mouse and keyboard will always win vs a gamepad player in online gaming when there is no aim help/lock. Or have you ever seen a "pro gamer" in CS or Quake etc. playing with a gamepad? And how do you even combine looking, aiming and moving at the same time with a pad without "tumbling around"?

I don't know. But some people can do that very well. I don't know about battlemode, but this is mostly a single player title and if it works for people...

All right. But is it possible that you fear the possibility that he might be better than you with his lousy (pro) controller?

Imagine going to a car forum, asking people about engine trouble you're having with your car, and the only response you get from the comments is "Damn, you're dumb for buying a car. You should have got a truck."

If you don't know what could be causing controller issues, it's perfectly acceptable to ignore my post, but I don't need a lecture on my choice of input devices.

No worries. It's a pretty specific issue and I doubt many people are going to run into it. I've had better luck getting results on other forums anyway.
