Boring, Linear, and Lack of Difficulty Options
Say what you want about the original Doom games but they at least had some sense of exploration, even if it was boiled down to findings secrets and keys. You couldn't, for example, dart through each level in a completely linear fashion like you do in Doom Eternal.

As a result, Doom Eternal feels more like Serious Sam than the traditional Doom. It's just kill enemies in a room that spawn all around you, enemies respawn, kill them again, go to next area.

All the secrets and "hidden areas" in Doom Eternal often just involve looking around a corner or punching a marked section of wall. They're not very hidden or secret other than the fact that they're not directly next to the door to go to the next area.

Also, what's with the difficulty? You have all the difficulties that are worthless, and then you have Nightmare (which is too easy), but then after Nightmare it's some ridiculous hardcore mode?

So the game gives you these two options...

A) Too Easy (Nightmare)
B) Ridiculous (Ultra Nightmare)

Nobody playtested the game and thought..."hey guys, maybe some people want a challenge without having to beat the game in a single life?"

Oh wait, apparently they did playtest it (https://www.kotaku.com.au/2020/03/why-i-regret-beating-dooms-ultra-nightmare-mode/), and nobody in their own internal testing team apparently beat Ultra Nightmare, so rather than presenting a fun and challenging middleground....they said **** it.

You might think I'm nitpicking, but I'm really not. Anyone who's a fan of the original Doom games remembers the generous difficulty options they give you. Doom, Duke3d, all these early boomer shooters did a great job at presenting difficulty.

I'm under the impression with this game, they made the difficulty really easy because they think you guys aren't good at shooting games and don't care for better difficulty scaling. Turns out, they were right. For this, I blame you guys rather than Bethesda. Git gud.

I can't tell if you're bragging or whining.

Personally, I find the game almost too hard on Ultra-Violence, but that's great because I like a good challenge.

It seems you don't.. but it also seems you're a gifted prodigy because nightmare is too easy for you..?

It must suck to be so good yet so far from awesome.

I personally don't like difficulty options in games. I think there should be one difficulty and the content should range from fairly easy to ball bustingly hard.

You're right about this being linear and largely being a string of arena battles, rather than the traditional Doom formula of; combat being, (almost), completely optional with the main focus being on navigation.
I think I might have looked at the in game map maybe twice, I can't even recall what the map even looks like ngl. I haven't got lost in a Doom game since Doom 2, sadly it's rare they spend the time making more complex orienteering puzzles as I don't think most find them as fun as you or I.

The difficulty settings are fine for most.
If Nightmare isn't challenging enough for you, try the extra life mode or impose your own rule, like restarting the entire level if you die. It's a shame the game has no option to shotgun start, stripping you of all your weapons and upgrades upon death, but games for the most part are aimed at a much more casual audience than in the past.

Ultra Nightmare is great, I wish more games would impose more extreme difficulty levels.
I used to love playing the old Metal Gear games on Euro Extreme, with it set so you'd get game over if you got spotted.

Oh, nearly forgot. There's a Cheat Code you find in Nekravol, called Famine Mode. That might spice up the difficulty for you. It makes it so enemies no longer drop health or armour. Hope this helped.
