Are jumping pads worse than monkey bars?
There's a lot of criticisms aimed at Eternal's monkey bar mechanic. In this thread I want to talk specifically about the ones aimed at monkey bars being used in combat, as a part of arena design, and not during platforming sections. I'm not aiming to "prove critics wrong" or to "defend" the game; I have a specific question, however. Why do you guys despise monkey bars so much but never say anything about jump pads being used in both Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal, for the first time in the franchise's single player, as far as I know.

The most common arguments against monkey bars that I recall (feel free to add more):
Monkey bars make levels feel less realistic
I think neither 2016 nor Eternal really go for realism in their combat arena design, but in Eternal monkey bars are usually disguised as something - broken pipes in city levels, something that looks like ornate banner pole you could imagine a demonic banner hanging from in hellish levels. Jump pads are, well, jump pads. Why are they here? Who knows. Why is there a couple of jump pads in UAC Advanced Research Complex in front of Hayden's office? Do UAC secretaries use those to get across faster? Do they also get double jump high heels to prevent breaking their legs? This is too funny of a mental image. Why are there jump pads in Hell, too? I don't think AI even can use those.
Monkey bars make Doomguy move too fast and/or too far
I've seen that argument as well. Not everyone likes the increased air mobility of Doomguy in Eternal. That's understandable, in the classic games (which are also the best games) Doomguy can't jump at all. But jumping pads do the same thing. They can also "fling the player the length of a football field". Why do they get a pass?
It's unrealistic that a big burly Marine in powered armor would swing on a monkey bar
This might be the best argument against bars. A lot of them look like they aren't particularly sturdy. While jumping pads are obviously some kind of high technology designed to fling heavy objects (how realistic that is is up to your interpretation), a leaking lead pipe would probably break if a burly armored dude tried to swing on it. I guess people might also question the physics of monkey bars extending flight. I'm not a gymnast, and what little I remember from my high school physics class had been mostly erased by time, so I can't comment here.
Monkey bars just suck stylistically
Also a good argument. No complaints here.

Overall, it feels to me like people accept jumping pads in Doom because those were in other id FPS, and since became a staple of the genre, no matter how silly they are. Monkey bars are new to FPS so obviously there's a lot of resistance to the idea. But I'll be happy to hear what you think!

Important edit #1
After some research I have conclusively proven that technically the acrobatic elements we collectively call "monkey bars" in Doom should be called "horizontal bars".
