id should have done a Quake reboot
I'm kinda bummed out. Doom 2016 and Eternal were some of my favorite games of all time. I think Eternal is peak gunplay... quite possibly out of any game ever. The flow, the rhythm, the enemy design, the guns, it's utterly flawless. Everything about the game is perfection - it's fun, it's visually impressive, it's technical yet simple - it's a whole package deal. Might have even been a cosmic coincidence. It will never be topped for a long, long time. That being said, I think ID needs to take a break from Doom. Eternal's DLC is the start of the blow off phase in an anatomy of a stock market bubble. The enemies were more annoying than fun to fight. The challenge was good but the memories weren't as fun as the base game. I think ID just ran out of ideas because they went all out with Eternal. Dark Ages might drive the series into the ground again just like with Doom 3. It legit sounds like their cancelled Doom 4 idea.

What ID needs to do is take the same exact Doom formula, speed it up a bit, apply a Quake skin to it (e.g. changing demons to aliens, Doom guns to Quake guns, etc), give it a typical scifi alien invasion story, throw in some multiplayer (because Quake Champions and Live are still alive), and viola. You got a fresh game with the same lovable gunplay. You are giving people what they want but it's very distinct and Quake like now. Instead ID is going in the opposite direction and they are trying to fix something that is perfect (i.e. the gameplay) by slowing it down with a medieval theme. TAKE A BREAK GUYS. Quit while you are ahead. We are all still playing Eternal or 2016 and will be for a while. Revisit the Eternal sequel after a Quake reboot. Don't let your other franchises be forgotten because you can work the same magic on Quake as you did on Doom back in 2016. Sheesh.

There's no real definition. More or less - how the gun feels when you shoot it, how the enemy reacts to begin shot, how satisfying it is to get a kill, how much you can interact with the gun, and all the other technical stuff that comes with it - sound, recoil, animation, etc. Basically how close a gun can feel to a real gun and feedback.

Some examples of good gunplay - Doom Eternal, RE4 remake, Wolfenstein New Order, Battlefield series, Metro Exodus.

Bad gunplay examples - Half Life 2, Uncharted, Mass Effect series, Serious Sam. Just all around feelings of flatness or boredom kinda like you are firing pixels.

HL2 is 50/50, I’d say. You have really satisfying guns like shotgun, revolver and crossbow, and some really bad ones like the pistol.

Pistol for sure. SMG is also bad. Enemies eat up SMG rounds and go from instantly alive to instantly dead while getting pulled towards the ground like a magnet. Not only that but enemies literally don't react to getting shot. You see the blood and the stains but they don't even flinch. No matter what gun is it (unless it's a 1 hit kill). 4 years before HL2 we had Perfect Dark on the N64 which had enemies react to getting shot in the leg, in the arm they would drop their gun, in the head it would be a kill shot, etc. Crazy how they could pull it off on a damn Nintendo console, games today barely even do that right now all while claiming to be hyperrealistic.

Uhhh the enemies do flinch in HL2, just not one every shot. In Doom terms, they have a low pain chance.

With heavily armored and augmented Combine goons, I feel like it makes sense.

Gunplay is the mouthfeel of FPS.

Stick that pinky up and make sure to note the hint of Terra cotta.

Okay so just weapon feedback in general then. The way I've seen some people use the term made me think it was more like advanced mechanics and weapon switching.

They did. The DOOM reboot was in 2016 and the Quake reboot was in 2017 early access and 2022 full release.

You're asking for something that already happened:

I'm talking about a single player Quake 2/4 reboot. I'm well aware of the 3 ARENA reboot.

Quake reboot?
Ok.
meanwhile looking at DE where they munched together a couple of iconic things from two to three different IP's as if they were scared their game was not good enough and did not know what else to add so just use something that was already there 20 years ago into one game.
