I imagine it is not something common but in one part of ancient gods 2 I spent hours getting through 1 area
You don't.
In my personal experience the gaming loop is pretty rewarding once you master it, I never felt that I needed a certain weapon to kill a certain demon, I make use of every single one of them, obviously some demons have weakness to some weapons but this doesn't mean you "need" to kill them with an exact weapon.
You can also master some combos to maximize your damage or the resources yu get from a single demon, like freezing it, set it on fire and then chainsawing it. Or learning to quick change weapons to get an absurd amount of damage to a Cyberdemon and not staying out of ammo right after.
Not before it desperately turns its head in search of a new host. It's hilarious.
So I was rather very bored and kinda walzed through this without actually paying attention to what was going on, to be frank.
Most "new" encounters where like this:
Ok what's this? What now?
Oh same thing just different skin? Oh just another boring game idea.
Oh another 0815 arena fight.
YaY
That game "makes you feel like Batman" and succeeds.
This game "Makes you feel like a badass" and fails, miserably, to actually be badass.
The way that 'timed reaction' system is slap-dashed into the FPS is what we call "half-baked", and why DOOM:Eternal is so divisive, and only embraced by a niche bunch.
It's not organic in its execution, and people noticed.
The possessed demons create a more pressing threat, force you to get better at dealing damage quickly and evading, and create a tense moment when you're trying to microwave the spirit. I like how it's like "come on, COME ON, COME ONNN!! ... YES!" when you barely manage to get the spirit in time. Microwave beam is actually a great mod if used correctly and I like it much better than the heat blast so I'm all for its usage being encouraged tbh.
I feel like going from getting my ass kicked to being able to handle TAG1 on nightmare comfortably was when I really "got gud" and only increased my appreciation for the game.
try using the unmaykr and/or spamming lockon burst on the possessed demons to damage them, and also remember that you can briefly stun them any time you want with microwave beam (but nothing else). When cooking the spirit, remember you can still use grenades while beaming it and you can safely detach your beam from the spirit for a second or two without it making any progress towards possessing a new host because it will briefly remain faltered after the beam disconnects. Jumping/bunnyhopping helps counteract the mobility penalty of the microwave beam as well.
I understand your struggle though tbh.
it's normal for people to have to play the DLC on 1 difficulty below the level they'd play the campaign on though, tbh. It's definitely hard but I found it really fun even on ultra nightmare, despite failing several times.
