If you disconnect from it go offline while playing it tells you your progress won't be counted so am pretty sure you can play offline if you want to.
You don't need internet connection to play the game. In fact, sometimes, the Steam network goes offline, and you get an in-game message saying something about the progress, but you can keep playing, and it keeps track of where you are or reached. The only thing that gets messed up when the stupid Steam network goes offline (but this is not really Doom Eternal's fault, but Valve's) are the hours you played that are shown in your Steam account. I honestly don't understand why, if the Steam network goes offline, even though you have internet connection, you can't play a game online, even if it's connected to Steam. It makes no sense. I don't understand why such a big limitation exists.
The idea of having a library of games or a place where you can buy all games is nice, but Steam is not just that, it forces you to get dependent on it. It's way worse than having to create a Bethesda's account, which you will rarely have to interact with. So, I don't really understand why you're so worried, given that you use something like Steam.
I've just bought the game too. It's not that simple. I already have 2 Microsoft accounts, both forced by stupid, unnecessary services, like GFWL etc. Why would I need another, 3rd MS account, just because of branding? Bethesda IS owned by Microsoft. An MS account should suffice, especially one that's been linked to gaming for about a decade or more.
Thinking of a refund, while remembering Gabe Newell's words: "Piracy is a service problem, not a pricing problem."...
If you want event goodies, then yes. For multiplayer too, I guess. If you only want to play sp and don't care about skins, you can play without.
So no.
