Moreover, their specific design approach could be described as a bit over-the-top, perhaps even off-putting for some.
I just call it "very cringe". But that's just me!
It can sometimes feel like they're leaning heavily on flashy aesthetics rather than truly innovative content.
Horde mode in DOOM Eternal is the best example to highlight this what I call "cringe".
With its extensive use of dazzling visuals and blinking ♥♥♥♥ between arena fights, one might initially perceive it as something groundbreaking.
However, once you cut through all the glitz and glam, it's essentially a sequence of similar arena battles arranged in a repeating pattern.
Yes, it's an enjoyable experience in its own right, but underneath the flashy facade, it's not fundamentally different or innovative compared to what we've seen before. It's just the same recipe, served with a bit more rainbow-♥♥♥♥.
Players who like that will be thrilled, people who like more variation or didn't like the forced dance with the mobs probably get bored of the horde mode very quickly.
That one of my biggest peeves with it, the weapon rng, if we had a fully upgraded slayer/arsenal and the arenas were master level type difficulty with large waves that test your stamina, it'd be way more engaging. Its a totally unnecessary addition that, in my opinion, takes more away from the game mode than adds to it.
I was a huge fan of the 2016 one, top 800 in most levels on nightmare when I used to play, so I was at least hopeful, but that got dashed pretty quick lol
Id be way more into it if it resembled 2016s A.M more.
It not even that its over the top, its just, silly, restrictive and contrived.
It didn't need to be pushed towards some try hard re-imagining of a very simple concept.
I would have been legitimately happy with a circular arena that has absolutely ridiculous spawn rates/demon sets that force the player to use every single mechanic all the time for like 50 waves that get harder and harder.
But instead we got something that falls flat pretty quick imo.
Youre both right in a lot of ways.

There are others but for my preferences that's my favorite.
I can definitely see where youre coming from. For me its a "how versatile can I be with all the weapons/abilities so I can just do whatever, whenever and not die". lol Im the same way with the points, unless the mode is specifically about getting points, this was some weird mash up. Which is probably why it kinda sits wrong I think lol.
This looks really interesting, gunna check it out, cheers.
