DOOM Eternal
Doom Eternal Is An Amazing Game You Should Play
Ahead of the upcoming sale, I thought I'd put this out there for anyone coming here to gather some information/impressions from people who have played the game.

As someone who's played every single Doom dating back to it's release in 1993 I feel like Eternal is a worthy successor to the franchise that many fans of the series should be able to appreciate. This is even more true if you enjoyed Doom 2016 - which introduced many ideas Eternal further refines. Some general things to know:
  • The game starts out feeling extremely difficult and is unwelcoming - you have to learn how ammo/resource management works, which is quite different from other games and much more heavily emphasized in Eternal than in 2016. Once you understand the mechanics and are given all the tools available the game becomes fairly easy and flexible for most players

Early levels are essentially tutorials that punish you for not adhering to mechanics as they're introduced. This melts away after a few hours after the game has exposed much of the mechanics to you, and you're turned loose in levels that are challenging but feel less rigid.

  • You'll be expected to understand how to platform and move through the arena - you won't just sprint through it and there will be green lit (literally) paths you'll need to follow. This will likely all be jarring, exhausting and frustrating if you're new. It will get easier after a few hours, and the movement will make much more sense.

  • As with most id games, Gameplay comes first - this is no exception.
There isn't much emphasis on lore and secrets aren't deceptively hidden, so exploration is minimal. You're not going to get to run through the Exit door like you did in 93 without getting a lot of demon blood on your hands first.

As the game is almost 3 years old there's plenty of videos out there that offer some good tips for beginning players and ways to up your game. But if you need help or motivation don't hesitate to reach out on this board as there's plenty of experienced slayers willing to help.

Have fun and kill some ♥♥♥♥!

It really is great

Haven't felt the need to keep coming back to play a game like I have with this in a long time. Even longing for some rip and tear while I'm working, calculating my next hit combos in anticipation for it. It's just a blast to play and practice at.
When I see new or bad players suffering through the game, almost always their mistake is simply not moving enough. Most monsters in Doom Eternal will lead their shots, which is relatively rare in FPS. Simple circle strafing is not enough. Try to always move, and move erratically. Make use of the double jump ability you start with, and of dash when you get it. Consider upgrading the dash recharge as soon as you get the required 4 Sentinel tokens.

Remember, if you move without rhythm, you won’t attract the fireball.
this game has a super shotgun with a flaming meathook, it a single handedly reason to play this game

Finally some competence, I'm glad to read this. It should be pinned so EVERY new player can read it. I would say in addition that the player has more freedom not only in the mere movement but also in strategy, compared to DOOM 2016: you can choose one of the available runes and this will help you in earlier levels when you don't have upgrades yet.

And the base game's campaign is only the beginning, because we have Master Levels (in which player will be fully upgraded, but encounters are more challenging) and DLCs.

This game ROCKS.
Honestly, Exultia through Cultist Base is a lot to handle when you're first jumping into the game. You're being hit with a lot all at once and it does require quite a bit of persistence. It can be difficult to thread the needle the first few times you go through it.

But yeah, to build on what Marco said - I think the first rune you should take on your first playthrough is Air Control - which I've said before. This rune helps a lot with the rest of Exultia and just really helps ease you into the platforming and aerial combat that is critical to master in this game.

If it were, it wouldn't need such desperate shilling like the above.

The game is geared toward a niche handful of die hard try-hards, which is antithetical to the franchise whose namesake it stole. It has suffered a deservedly short lifespan because of this.
The rapid decline in both sales & popularity showcases that.
Interest in the DLC was practically nonexistent.

DOOM:Eternal's dwindling player pool isn't going to get any larger -- sorry to break that to OP.

That's MMO speak for "I'm pissed at people that're good at the game."

It's not shilling if ya like a thing..

It seems plenty popular to me. Any single player game fades with time. It's normal. And the DLC was some of the best I ever played. It's almost as much content as the main game.
DOOM Eternal is one of the best FPS games ever. The skill floor is higher than the average shooter, that's a fair point. Once you get into the flow, it's absolutely fantastic. I cannot sing the praises of this game enough, it's main campaign has almost perfect difficulty. DLC 1 is pretty brutal, and DLC 2 is more player friendly, but still incredibly fun. Lots of master levels to try out too, and horde mode for when you just want to slay and conquer.

Definitely pick it up if it's on sale, but I would go so far as to say it's worth full price

If this game was exactly the same in every way, but with a title other than DOOM, would you like it? Most of your criticism is based on the fact that it doesn't feel like a classing 1993 DOOM game, but much more overblown.

I love Cultist Base. The game really tests your skills, but if you pass, you receive two incredibly powerful weapons. Plus, the aesthetic of a Gothic cathedral made out of polished metal and located in frozen wastes and filled with weird mechanisms is just so cool and unusual.
Excellent game...Just completed my Nightmare run and it felt rewarding..did it with no sentinal or extra lives as I feel those were included for filthy casuals hehe..

But man Icon of Sin was a buggy mess...felt like I had very little control over doom guy the entire battle and it highlighted how ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and laggy the Crucible was.

Otherwise all the battles up to him were top notch...games great the bosses suck...cept Doom Slayer..that was alright.

No -- I wouldn't have bothered to give the game the required try-hard learning curve to 'get good' if it weren't an exercise in brand-masking. The game's reward-factor was not worth it for the time/effort wasted.

As it was, the thin veneer of faux-quality wore off after 2 playthroughs of chasing skins and any content resembling the classic motif of the property it bastardizes.
The futility of its non-dynamic, rhythm-based repetition came to the forefront in that time.

The game would have pissed me off less -- that's for sure -- if it wasn't smearing DOOM's brand through the dirt with its micromanaged malarkey.

Grats - applying the mechanics to get through Nightmare is a great feeling!

I personally like the IoS fight but the first few times for me it felt very hectic and chaotic for sure. I've seen a lot of users criticize the fact that it's more about the adds that are summoned than it is about the actual boss himself which is actually a pretty fair criticism in a way.

You get to a certain point with him that he just becomes a pushover sadly. He's pretty easy to burst down with the SSG and Precision Bolt hotswaps.

I found Cultist Base to be the biggest hurdle difficulty-wise, but also the tipping point - once you've gotten through that, the rest of the game really opens up and becomes your playground (thank you, SSG).

I'll try that weapon combo if I fight him again...I literally just took him out with the cannon missiles because the damage was so damn high. You can spray a full set of ammo at the very beginning of the fight then add a BFG shot to get him below half health. Run and grab the orb if you got merked in the process. I guess hot swapping would've been good for when I ran out of ammo...but that thing absolutely demolishes him.

The biggest issue I found was his damn fist...even tho it was nowhere near you, you seemed to be thrown about the map. The Enemies spawning was wtvr...a BFG shot or two usually reset everything and wasn't a big deal, and I rarely used the BFG for Icon as I found it most helpful to just shoot in his general direction and take everything out. I can deal with the enemies...being flung straight into them without warning pissed me off.

It's whatever...it's over. I'm maxing my character now and then going onto masterlevels. Wasn't a fan of the bosses in this game really. But FPS bosses are never good.
