That's tantamount to the first level or two of a videogame, or chapters in a book.
without an opener, a piece of entertainment will fizzle and die.
The only thing that kept me going past the opening room was, admittedly a try-hard attitude -- but that was only there because it was supposed to be the new DOOM game, so I felt it deserved my due diligence in experiencing what was there.
That's kind of the niche market the game is geared towards... folks looking to sink time into replaying "DOOM Souls" for bragging rights in a dwindling crowd.
A bad move for the premiere AAA FPS franchise to make.
Playing this game was work the entire time, and only after the first 20 hours did that slog even begin to pay off.
As a casual player, or with a similar gameplay experience in another franchise -- I definitely would not have bothered.
DOOM:Eternal only kept my attention long enough to "learn the loop" because of its pedigree, and that it offered the options to homage the classic titles in the skins/avatar.
It's surprising that Hugo Martin, coming from Hollywood, didn't realize and adhere to this reality of employing a strong open. Maybe he thought he was more creative and 'above the formula' that works for DOOM? He definitely spoke about that exact approach with DOOM2016 -- so it's kind of mysterious why that ethos was abandoned when he took full charge for D:E.
All we know for sure is that he didn't do much work in Tinsel Town, except sketching some robots for 'Pacific Rim'.
Its wtvr...Im on Icon of Sin and didn't unlock the missile mod for the cannon...guess I'll go back and find one because the videos seem to show that is literally the best weapon to do damage to him....
I also may just keep my game-play style and fight him with what I got tho...it was tough, but I literally didn't do any exploring to level up besides a few slayer gates and using whatever came up on the fastest path to the end. It just pumps the adrenaline way to much to want to tediously search through a level.
The platforming really is helping with the fights tho...it does teach you to use your surroundings to traverse around a battlefield. I was irritated when some of the platforming was easy and mundane and some of the answers to some of the puzzles were again, tedious, while my blood was pumping from just finishing a tough fight.
But I liked the game...It really is a breath of fresh air to have a game run at a respectable FPS and have a high enough difficulty ceiling as nightmare mode and master levels. It's a game...and criticisms besides technical hiccups(which there are few) are moot when it simply sold well and was critically acclaimed.
Best of luck on your next title. I personally am chilling with Horizon: Zero Dawn at the moment but I'm not playing games much anymore.
Eternal isn't for everyone and you gave it a shot - that's fair enough in my book.
The game starts you with one weapon and it gradually ads more and there is like 5 difficulty levels.
How is the inverse?
You really do suck at the game.
Sounds like you barely even got to Cultists Base.
Well you are PAST the refund point according to Steam.
Make it to Super Gore Nest, you will change your mind.
Edit:
I read your review, you really did not make it past Cultists base which is a combat heavy level.
Okay you got one more platforming heavy level left called Doom Hunter Base but if you make it to the end you will come to understand why the game is making you literally jump through hoops.
It is like a Mr Miyagi kind of thing.
Wax on, Wax off.
The idea is that you get used to moving around as much as possible and the game is balanced entirely around your ability to stay up in the air. Air time is the name of the game in later arenas as demons are much faster, you will have Barons and Marauders.
If you are impatient, you can just jump onto horde mode and experience the raw combat. Eternal is difficult, more so than any other game made by Id. Compared at times with Plutonia.
I feel Id spent too much time trying to accessible and that only enraged slow people.
Meanwhile here is Zero Master playing both and excelling at them.

By the way, people comparing Eternal to Mario are exaggerating but the discussion did inspire New Blood to make this in response to said comments:

If Eternal is Mario, Ultrakill wanted to be Crash Bandicoot.
I love New Blood.
It's funny how people can't accept criticism or other opinions. Or even how some people don't understand the reasons behind some choices/ideas and decide to completely ignore the post to directly attack others and try to ridicule them.
Lol, ye olde "git gud". Quite boring.
judging by your acheivements, you haven't even gotten past the third level... you havent given the game a fair chance. So yes, you should learn the game before you go whine on steam about how this game is not doom 2016. Im not going to respcect your opinion because you haven't played the game enough.
Look, most of us hated doom eternal at first when it came out, including me. I straight up quit the game during the hell on earth mission and didnt return for 2 months later. But when you take time to actually learn the game you will see it is far superior to doom 2016. I cant even go back and play that game after eternal, its mechanically boring and takes no skill.
SO yes, im giving you the ole git gud, because that is exactly the treatment you require. It is not my goal to attack you personally. I really just want to help you through these growing pains and help you find a way to appreciate this game. Give it time and play with an open mind, or just refund the game. It okay to not like the game. But Your opinion wont tarnish the fact that this is one of the best fps games of all time.
The game doesn't require much strategic thinking at all.
It's basically a Dance Dance Revolution game with a Doom-inspired skin.
All you really need is good muscle memory and quick reflexes. Most of the time, you don't even need to aim - you just need to look in the direction the screen is flashing. The similarities to Dance Dance Revolution are undeniable. In short, thinking is the last thing you'll be doing in nuh-Doom.
If your are not aware of DDR then try looking up "Whac-A-Mole".
Thats the principle of the game loop. It is not thinking strategically at all, it is just reacting.
Many here confuse those two things.
Runs like the smoothest demonic butter ever on 4090 all maxed out, no dlss/blur.
Not exactly hordes of baddies, but some decent fights. Oh and it's shiny, and bloody.
Not a huge fan of the 'jumpy' stuff....double jump? Ok, but why am I swinging from parallel bars like some Olympian?
Only have 2 guns so far, so we shall see where this goes....
