The designers claimed they "wanted to make it chess-like" -- which, in reality, means restricting the player to a set & limited number of moves for any encounter. In this game's case, the majority of it is waiting on animation/invincibility timers to run out.
This is mechanically inappropriate for the fire-and-maneuver, dynamic-encounter-based gameplay of the DOOM franchise.
It literally IS a chore to "play" this game.
Most fans are alienated -- you aren't alone in your observations.
DOOM:Eternal landed like a lead balloon.
That approachability is a staple of the franchise.
Sadly, this game is the inverse of that.
The character moves in one direction to progress -- in this case, forward -- and traverses vertical obstacles & hazards; like in Mario Bros (sometimes, literally so).
...Those flaming fire wheels were some damning writing on the wall.
How far have you progressed in the game?
The feeling you're managing a bunch of cooldowns early in the game is intentional - the game is designed to fully expose these systems to you so you understand their weight in the gameplay - and force you to practice using them.
As you begin getting more upgrades and weapons they start to settle as tools and not the hard focus of your skillset, and the gameplay advances into more intense encounters that fully utilize the tools.
The game will feel exhausting - there is a lot to learn and until many of the mechanics become second nature it does feel mentally taxing. I can absolutely sympathize with this.
Platforming really is just a staple in id shooters and has been since Quake 1. I always recommend taking the Air Control rune on level 2 to ease this as you're learning in Doom Eternal - it greatly eases combat and traversal. It's an easy rune to overlook and is much more impact full than it seems compared to other runes.
Ultimately the game just may not very for you. That's totally cool and I would recommend any of the other great arena shooters out there instead, like Dusk, Cultic, or Ion Fury. Have fun either way and best of luck.
Doom 2016 did also a much better job with making these seem like a part of the world instead of something ripped from super mario
Aesthetically sure, but I think the way 2016 handled platforming was a much larger interruption for the rest of the game.
Oh don´t worry, it won´t happen. Already uninstalled. Pity I can´t ask for a refund anymore
Maybe so. I do think Eternal is overall the superior game though, its just the platforming
Yes, I was completely overwhelmed and nervous, which I tend to avoid when I want to play something. I felt like I was working, when all I wanted to do was relax, aim and shoot as stupidly as possible, like Doom should be.
If I wanted a 3D platformer I would have played Mirror's Edge, if I wanted only a few bullets I would have played Resident Evil.
But I had to deal with so much crap and I simply didn't want to play anymore, I was completely annoyed. It doesn't matter if it was the first two levels: they sucked.
Thank you very much for your suggestions :)
