BUT, for when I do use it: the burst mod because I hate dreadknights and a single burst will put them into glory kill states quickly and very consistently. I'm too lazy to deal with the frogbois
Instant LoB is great for damage, and if you're not into swapping then LoB is a great problem solver.
For me though, honestly PB swapping is easier to do on command and does more than enough damage, no delay when locking on, and the utility make remote detonate my preference. If you can PB swap then the damage from LoB isn't as attractive.
Lock on is very one dimensional. Yes, it does a lot of damage to a single target, but a combo does that too. It has no splash damage. It does effectively less damage than 3 single rockets would.
Remote detonation can be used in a number of ways. It falters enemies, it can get behind a shield or a pinkie's hard front. It blows up groups of fodder. And it does all that without damaging yourself which a regular rocket would do in many cases.
If I don't have an ice grenade ready, I falter the cybermanc with remote det before I go in for a blood punch. I find that easier to do than using a grenade timing wise. Plus I don't waste that grenade. It's a great faltering tool in general. A so called "soft" faltering tool, mind you. More to that in the video I link at the end of this.
I use lock on in some cases, mostly with possessed enemies. They are immune to faltering and super fast. Yes, a combo would still be better I guess, but knowing that a possessed hell knight goes down with exactly two lock ons is easy to process in my moment to moment planning.
There are speed runners that can do crazy things with lock on combos, but I don't even want to think about that stuff.
Here's the video, it's useful:

but remote det is fun too, it falters enemies and pretty funy
If you need the direct dps then yes, LoB is great. But from a utility standpoint there are drawbacks - Overkill and ammo efficiency, delay while locking, being forced to concentrate on 1 target, no splash damage, etc.
While remote detonate is lower dps output on its own you're less likely to waste ammo on Overkill and it combos much better with more of your arsenal and abilities, and allows you to reliably exploit mechanics that can give you the edge.
I really think if you take the raw damage out of the equation it's a matter of preference.
I disagree. Remote det is better for killing mobs and can stun even larger enemies.
