It's hard to choose a favorite game ever, as i love multiple franchises, From Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Doom, Quake, CastleVania, EldenSekiroSoulsborne and all the modern/retro inovative FPS games we are getting.
Doom eternal is good but not good as doom 1,
honorable mention: doom 2 sucks
thats why i prefer plutonia experiment over doom 2
I cant talk about doom64 since it never attracted me, its a good game tho
“But muh Knee Deep” - yeah, if I wanted to shoot humanoids with a shotgun I’d rather play FEAR (another overrated game).
I like Doom 1 level design more, overall. Doom 2 fells like an expansion pack, or rather, an improvement over the original by a small margin. They could have packed a lot more into it, but it's still fantastic. Both games go down in history as one of the best, along with Quake 1.
In that sense, in my opinion Doom from 1993 remains an all-time classic, however, it is not fair to compare it to contemporary games. Currently, there is no real competition that meets the criteria of Doom Eternal, making it a clear winner without any close contenders, leaving a sense of incompleteness in my opinion.
However, when comparing it to other popular FPS games of recent times, such as Call of Duty, Halo Infinite and Overwatch, it falls behind in my opinion. This is because it is not as fun, not as innovative or smart in its game design, and focuses too much on the "dance dance revolution" fight mechanics, which detracts from the otherwise cool-looking game. Perhaps the next Doom installment will succeed in addressing these challenges. Additionally, the multiplayer aspect of the game was poorly executed to say it in a nice way! Doom without proper MP is like PUBG without battle royale in my opinion.
D:E was the biggest leisure-based over-promise of 2020.
This is also true.
DOOM64 FTW.
It was the best thing to come from the D:E release, in my opinion.
*mic drop*
Sure, CoD and Halo might not be as "innovative" as the original Doom, but they've certainly come a long way since their inception. The Halo franchise has a successful TV show, multiple bestselling games and even a feature film in development. The Call of Duty franchise is one of the most successful and profitable gaming franchises of all time, with millions of players logging in daily. And let's not forget the esports scene, both Halo and Call of Duty have thriving esports communities with huge tournaments and prize pools.
Let us see what Doom Eternal has in this sector.........
*the sound of crickets chirping*
On the other hand, Doom Eternal, while a great game in its own right, has not reached the same level of mainstream success and cultural impact as Halo or Call of Duty. It has not had the same level of player engagement, and it hasn't seen the same level of investment in esports or media ventures. So, while it's easy to dismiss Call of Duty and Halo as "mainstream" or "overhyped," the reality is that they have achieved a level of success and cultural impact that Doom Eternal has not yet reached.
Edit: I expected better arguments than argumentum ad populum from a self-professed game design enthusiast (perhaps an analysis of how cover based hits can shooters like Call of Duty were a breath of fresh air for stale FPS genre), but I should’ve known better.
