It uses the same ammo as the BFG. It's not just a skin, and is a unique weapon with unique functionality.
The Unmaker also first appeared in DOOM64.

Use the BFG if a ♥♥♥♥ ton of everything is out in the open.
That's how I personally like to use them at least.
It can delete Marauders, too, if you time it right. Wait for green flash, hit with SSG to stagger, quickswitch to Unmaykr, unload.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the damage output on an individual demon depends on the amount of enemies that are present during deployment.
The Unmayker gives you a chance to fire BFG round on an individual demon. That seems mighty handy when you think about it, vaporizing Barons of Hell or Archviles fast and easy. In practice however, I forgot this weapon completely. Mainly, because it eats the ammo like crazy which is already pretty sparse. Because of that, to me BFG is a superior weapon and the effect it has on demons make it way more versatile.
Still a real cool inclusion, even if it's not particularly useful.
I found the Unmaykr pretty useful against the Icon of Sin but can't find much other use for it. I used both the BFG and Unmaykr during the fight though.
