For the next one, Id should take a look at Ultrakill. The pistol remains relevant later on on Ultrakill, I would replace the Heavy Canon with a similar pistol and it would be more like the original Doom in that regard.
Well, you see, pretty much everything you described kinda goes against Eternal's combat design iteration, considering what they did with it ammo wise. So yeah, in addition to previous answers, I suppose giving a player an infinite ammo pistol in a game where even your regular punches don't deal any damage was out of question for Id.
Don't forget to bind your *shrug* button to a key of your choice.
