The music... is it lacking DOOM nostalgia by intent, or...?

The first one famously mimic'd the ♥♥♥♥ out of all the rock and metal celebrities of the time... metallica, slayer, nirvana and all the rest. I don't feel any of that in the music in this one.

I'm not sure what Doom nostalgia is. Nor am i sure if Metallica, Slayer, Nirvana and all the rest had an influence on Doom in the early '90s.

In fairness, the talking does make it difficult to pick up.

Edit: I'm positive I've heard other classic snippets throughout the game but nothing is coming to me. I thought I recalled hearing something in the first level so I loaded it and played for a bit. What I heard was subtly reminiscent of the classics but I honestly don't know if that's right or if my brain is trying to make it right.

A big reason is that Classic Doom music is a blatant copying of those classic metal songs by Metallica, Slayer, Pantera etc. (Apart from your mention of Nirvana, which I don't recall being used as one of the songs, but Alice in Chains definitely did have 2 of their songs used). It's not entirely original but I'll admit that Doom 1 and 2's OSTs have the most amount of "earworms" for that reason, so many songs that got stuck in my head.


New Dooms have good music with a greater focus on electronic sound. I'll admit though that only like 1 or 2 songs actually got stuck in my head. I don't think it's much of a negative point but it's noticeable. It's all mostly original work though, apart from some stuff that's referential to the classic music by remixing some of the riffs but you might not notice at first as it's done subtly.

if Hell on Earth level track (literally first level) doesnt feel "DOOM" enough to you then I dont know, play Metallica in background or something? DOOM 2016 & Eternal's soundtrack references DOOM 1-2 (even 3) a lot. Check this video.

Most doom eternal and doom2016 soundtracks are inspired by Classic Doom OSTs, and some of the classic doom osts inspired by bands like metallica,slayer,pantera,acdc,black sabbath...

New dooms has more electronic and sometimes heavy guitar feeling. I think it fits perfectly
