Dual GPUs, the bane of my life
Got a GTX 950 and a VEGA 56

if the GTX 950 is not disabled or ripped and teared from the machine, doom will invariably choose the 950 as the gpu to run the game, despite the main monitor being set to a monitor connected to the VEGA.

So far I have tried to force the game to pay more attention to VEGA using AMD control panel, which the game just handily ignores.

Is there a way to force the game to be run on a specific GPU without resorting to removing or disabling hardware? as so far the only way I have been able to play at all is to disable the 950 which causes all sorts of weird issues like creating a new nvidia hdmi audio device everytime you bring it back.

The game itself is 10/10 but this is really raining on that parade.

May I ask why on earth you are simultaneously using two cards of completely different architecture? What conceivable benefit could you be attempting to gain?
LordShoe 16 ABR 2020 a las 13:05
why are you blaming the game for your problems that you created?

dual GPUs are terrible for gaming because they process separate frames each already so they have stutter. Now you have 2 completely different ones?

man you've made your own rats nest there.

Seriously. Even dedicated (and correctly designed) multi-gpu setups really aren't a thing for gaming anymore. But this? I have no idea what this person thinks they're doing

Its pretty simple, when you are running a multi monitor setup that goes over the ammount a single card can do, you simply add more GPUs to be able to overcome the limitations of a single card. eg. running 6 or more screens which I'm doing as I'm using a workstation that I work with to also game. the reason there are 2 gpus is hardware passtrough work, pushing a gpu to a virtual machine and the 950 was just a very cheap way of adding a second card.

Not sure why you even thought I was trying to use anything that is similar to sli or crossfire.

This game is literally the only game in my steam library that does not respect the "main monitor" setting and instead grabs what ever the machine has designated as GPU0.

if you go and disable the 950, vega becomes gpu 0. swapping pci-e slots has no effect, 950 gets designated as gpu0 each time.

The game will render on the main monitor but doom will restrict the settings based on 950s stats.

If the setting normally reserved for laptops in steam that allows launching for a specific gpu would be available in desktops, it would solve the entire issue.

This should really be a one line startup flag issue, as in "/gpu 1" so it would start in gpu1 instead of 0 but the ID tech 7 engine does not seem to have an option for it, it might even be hardcoded to the engine that it will always run on gpu0, which is bad software developing practice.

LOL then buy a GPU that supports that many ports or just buy monitors that support daisy chain configuration via Display port?

Yeah dude I'm telling you right now your setup and logic are outrageously bizarre. You're mixing cards not only of different power, but architecture. I have never actually seen someone do this, so congratulations I guess? You really don't have a leg to stand on when complaining about how your setup isn't supported when you've got this bizarre Frankenstein of a rig that nobody I n their right mind would use. There are a million standard ways to enable multi monitor setups, and you chose a strange nonstandard way. Even using 6 monitors doesn't explain why you chose to build a rig this way. There are single cards that support that many monitors (look up eyefinity cards). You chose to do it in a way that not only would I never recommend under any circumstances, but you're now sitting here saying that your bizarre setup isn't responsible for the issue you're experiencing.

AMD uses crossfire while Nvidia uses SLI for a dual card setup, but usually people use two cards of the same type for this rather than one from each brand. Why did you do this? You're not even getting the benefits of Crossfire or SLI setup which would have increased both performance and solved your issue for gaming at the same time. Makes no sense to me... unless it was price, etc.

When you use the term 'dual GPU's,' nobody assumes you mean 'two completely random cards mashed together."

Man...you brought this on yourself, no one in here should even help you out tbh, you are doing something pretty much every PC gamer knows is just...wrong.

Good luck tho.

At this stage I'm just kind of fascinated as to why on earth anyone would do this

Yeah ive never even heard of this, ive built 6 PC's from scratch, never EVER has it even crossed my mind to stick to diffrent GPU's of even DIFFRENT manifacturers inside the same cabinet. Ofcourse it isnt going to work, even SLI with 2 identical cards doesnt work as intended, i tried, twice.

Well theres always a first i guess.

Even not indending to link them in any way, its still weird. I've heard of people using a weaker card with dual Nvidia setups for Physx processing, but even thats a stretch. Using a Radeon and Nvidia card together has to have insane problems, especially if you're running weird competing drivers simultaneously

yall are missing the point.

its the GAMES FAULT for the amalgamation of random parts he somehow got to work together that dont cooperate with doom.

Its the SOFTWAAAAAAARE! I'd love to see a gpu-z link for this rig to see what other weird things are happening here
