Every time I play the Samur boss fight
I am reminded of how much I hate it.

I play everything else and I just love the game more and more. Even the Khan Maykr battle I really enjoy. I can see how much my skill has improved in this game.

But Samur. It is just a sh!t boss fight.

90% of the time it is not even really a boss fight.
90% of the time I cannot even see Samur himself.
90% of the times I DO get him in my sights, he teleports elsewhere.
90% of the times I die, it is because of all the other crap in the arena, not Samur himself.

I always come away feeling like I have not really had a boss fight.

Meanwhile Samur just ponces around having a little dance whilst thinking to himself, "Hmm, maybe I'll have a cup of tea whilst my minions do teh fυcking work."

Samur is one of the best boss fights I have ever played. Actually imo samur is the best boss in doom eternal.

He is actually hard and not stupid

Samur is an excellent boss, he tests all the skills you should have learned playing the game which is precisely what a boss should do. a boss should not be a bullet sponge or a simple gimmick. it should incorporate the full combat loop and assess all of the skills you should have learned. to this end only DOOM Hunter and Samur are actually good bosses in DOOM Eternal. The others are trivial but ultimately poor bosses. granted neither Samur or DOOM Hunter are hard, and DOOM Hunter is pretty trivial. BUT both incorporate the full combat loop and assess your ability to use the skills that game has taught you.

If Samur feels like a bullsh*t boss then you've failed to learn what the game is asking you to learn.

As for Samur you can just PB Balista spam him when you see him and use the blood makyrs and zombies for ammo.

the ez approach without having to be that good and what I used for my first UNM run.
P1: Just PB Balista / Lock On Burst him
P2: it's just 2 possessed demons, use lock on burst and don't be an idiot
P3: sticky bomb aim simulator, this is the most trivial phase other than P1
P4: it's just Samur and his blood makyr pal; so just PB Balista Samur and don't get stuck in the floor with the eyes and blood makyr
P5: 3x Arbalest or 2X BFG the meatball and kill its spirit, then you have all the time in the world to lock on burst the dread knight.
NOTES: remember in P4 and 5 the blood makyr is free ammo so use it. if you're in a dangerous situation in P5 use CGS to make yourself invulnerable and grab the sphere. you can also throw on saving throw if you're nervous about anything in the fight.

Classic doom bosses were just circlestrafe shooting or bfging bosses. Icon of sin was just a wall, wasnt really fun.

D2016 bosses were same and people abused siege mode to kill them easily.

Eternal bosses werent bad since the game isnt a braindead shooter anymore. I dont count Marauder and doomhunter as bosses cuz they are common enemies in the game. Gladiator was a smaller version of cyberdemon with all those jumping tricks n stuff, easy boss. Khan maykr is the easiest boss in the game you can drain her health fastly with lock on burst and area is filled with maykr drones. Icon of sin is a classic boss concept. The big bad guy and u shoot him until he dies. Dark lord is a disappointment and flashing mechanic in this game sometimes doesnt work properly.

Meanwhile samur had enviromental dangers, waves of small demons, powerfull eyeballs, blood maykrs. He is the only boss that actually tries to kill you, every stage of the fight is different. Also samur is just a slightly stronger version of normal angels,of course slayer could kill him in 1v1 in 30 secs

Hey some of us used heavy weapon rotations with DKSMS to kill the bosses in DOOM 2016 in under a minute :P

He's what the final test should be for a challenging DLC.

Can't say the same for Davoth, Davoth is fun but should have been saved for another game so they could flesh him out better

Imo there are two major issues in this fight:

overwhelming amount of hazards that are sometimes almoust impossible to avoid and feel very cheap.

DK very often does not work properly in the last phase, he either gets stuck on top of a pillar, or drops to the floor and stays here forever. Guess his AI is not adopted to fight in such location.

Otherwise it is a good fight, don't understand why his mobility is a bad thing, it is much better than fighting a bullet sponge that you shoot untill it dies, for sure

He's actually my favorite boss fight, interestingly enough.
That pain elemental is the real boss in this fight. Majority of the time I die, it's because he got above me or my shield ran out. It's usually always him, or those eyes.

I enjoy the fight, and it's the most difficult in the game, but I agree on the point that he doesn't feel like a boss by himself. I'd say he's more of a gimmick boss, and the "Boss fight" is everything he summons in. I also firmly believe the fight was deliberately designed to test people's endurance and awareness.

He's a lot more bearable after the TAG1 nerfs, and is actually my favorite boss to fight in Eternal.

Samur is indeed a great boss - arguably the best in the game. He's a good challenge without reinventing his own mechanics.

the challenge samur proposes isnt even bad, it's his ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid arena design. Fighting 2 spirits is fun and a great challenge to cap things off, but that final phase is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid and the arena doesn't complement the design. for one its boring visually. just a square divided into 10 pillars that rise and lower. i can make that ♥♥♥♥ in snapmap easily. things are already narrow, that blood makyr can snipe your ass (and even if you kill it theyll respawn not even a full second later), and who thought the best form of transportation between the upper and lower levels were those teleporters? There's a good chance if i go through it that pain elemental is on the other side and WILL kill you if you're at half health on nightmare.

im convinced people say samur is good because the dark lord is easy and dissapointing. he's not fun to fight.

i don't think any doom boss is great but at least they're better than strafe-and-shoot-for-5-minutes-until-dead

  1. the point of thr fight is that it's in a box. It's literally as much a part of the fight as the spirits and Samur himself. It's supposed to feel cramped and reduce your available space. The shape is why the fight works.
  2. The Blood Maykr respawns in 8 seconds. If you kill or rekill it after the PE, that's enough time to unload your stock of rockets into the Dread Knight for the kill.
  3. Going through the teleporters is usually instant death and a noob trap. You should be meathooking or jumping, or at least shielding when you do.

The fight is tough and unforgiving if you mess up. That's how bosses should be.

It's the only fight i don't like in this game. It's just annoying on the final round with the pain and knight.
