Even old doom games had ridiculous story (in those mission end logs you would get at the end of episodes).
The story doesn't take itself seriously, is full of fan service, and it was never meant to be a narative masterpiece like silent hill 2 or some ♥♥♥♥. So why are you crying about it? It's a dumb, and pretty fun story - that is not too intrusive and doesn't impact the gameplay at all. With the gameplay being some of the best FPS genre has to offer.
Superfly, Noname, Unknown and all these other trolls who sit here and comment on every discussion how "Eternal is bad" - get a life. Seriously. You guys are so pathetic, that you spend your days ragging on a game you hate. Day in and day out. Do you even have a life?
There are tissues for your issues. use them.
Get wit.
Wait a second...
...Just sayin'.
I think one of the contributing factors is that people who focus on superficial aspects of the game - story, bright colors, etc. - are doing so because they haven't gone on the journey the game offers.
They might have cleared Nightmare or played through the campaign, or at least watched the cutscenes. They can pick out the dragon or hammer, portals with ships coming in and focus on that. They can talk about how gamebreaking a skippable cutscene is. They'll do this because they have zero investment in actually playing the game or understanding its actual appeal. Torch the whole forest because a few trees might be diseased.
They didn't grind out a deathless run in the Blood Swamps. They don't care about rebinding keys and improving. At this point, mastering the game and understanding the things that work in Eternal is blasphemous to their perception of it. It's easier to jump on the weakpoints and try to twist those flaws as a big part of the main drawback.
They're simply trying to validate the fact that they've so heavily missed the mark. Just let them; it actually kind of makes the whole experience more flavorful. I actually enjoy the guy who parrots "trashternal" in every thread.
Eternal isn't a perfect game - let them wallow in the shortcomings while we enjoy what makes it great. Enjoy the dichotomy and the reasons someone stands on either side.
