And you are wrong anyway. There are numerous viable options to killing in Eternal. Where as im willing to bet you use no more than two guns in 2016. Just like everyone that tries to make the "limits my creativity" argument.
With doom internal they tried to Branch out and do a little bit more of a faster pace game play.
And it does force your hand intoo learning weapon combos and such.
In an effort to be able to make the game as sufficiently fast as possible.
Personally I love the direction that they have taken the game in.
However that's me. And despite what the Beatles say I am not you as you are not me.
Don't try too hard to like a game that you're not liking. Just cus you *loved the old games*
Games are meant to be fun. play what you enjoy! if you try to force your self to play something your not truly enjoying your just setting your self up for more for frustration and disappointment.
IDK if what im saying is gonna help or hurt.
Just my opinion on the matter.
I wish you the best <3
first I hated it with a passion, then I tried to embrace all the new mechanics (after all I wasted good money on it mostly because of D16) sorta liked it for a while but ultimately came back to same conclusions.
It´s just a very narrow loop with artificial annoyances and a few extra tricks that get old pretty fast but not only that, level design, game design, presentation, story, everything is full of very questionable decisions and extra fat everywhere whereas D16 was a lot more focused, tight and straight.
not gonna repeat myself in details here as I already wrote too much about it.
that said the main campaign is kinda okay if you are in the mood for something like this… and I even liked Tag1 because when I played it I was deep into the “loop” and UAC atlantica and swamp were fine levels but Tag2 is where everything fell apart again..
going back to some classics and having a lot more of good old fun again without all the extra fluff and crap of eternal made me realize again how much I really don´t like the new direction id went with.
so much that for the first time I am gonna be very careful with buying the next id title without double or triple checking before that I might really enjoy it.
They really did the Caco demon dirty
I think the OP is correct that it does go it's own direction and moves away from the classic Doom formula that 2016 modernized so beautifully.
I appreciate this game for what it is though instead of being critical of what it isn't. I believe the gameplay is some of the most fun of any shooter I've ever played. The action is visceral and satisfying in a way most games never achieve.
It's not very Doom-ish in that classic style anymore but I still love it. So I get you OP, even though I don't agree with you.
Well, you folks seem to care, to the point of even reply. Let the dude share his opinion, liking it or not.
However, I gotta be in the mood to play this because of how stressful it can get or how long fights take sometime. Doom 2016 or other Doom games, I never really felt like I had to stop playing and take a break. This game though... Its so good, but it can be so draining to me. On top of that, I only recently started The Ancient Gods DLC, completed part 1 last night. Started up part 2 this morning and seeing the steel imp demons only being vulnerable to the full auto shotgun made me realize that they are legitimately forcing players to just use specific mods regardless of how unfun or boring those mods are. Like, why are the steel imps vulnerable to the full auto, but not rocket launchers or the stronger double shotgun? Just kinda boring to deal with.
Definitely an amazing game, but definitely something I gotta be in the mood for to want to play.
As OriginOrange says though, classic Doom all the way (although by that I mean on a modern source-port and mods all from tiny to complete overhauls, not like actually playing on an old DOS machine >_<)
Doom 2016 is one of my favorite games of all time, but Doom Eternal just has too much going on and ends up taking away a lot of choice from the player. I think the trouble is that Doom 2016 was already over-the-top (in a good way) but the devs tried to 1-up it with Eternal, which just took the game too far. I would have loved a much more down-to-earth version of Doom Eternal that felt more like a sequel to Doom 2016, but instead we got a goofy arcade shooter with way too much.
