Playing through Horde mode made me realize I don't really like Doom Eternal that much.
I am a huge Doom fan, have played everyone of them including the cell phone games and that on rails shooter for I-Phone... all the classics, and a lot of their ports.. I have more time in Doom 2 than my entire steam library combined.

Now let me clarify.. the base campaign... just the single player... is fine... its not as good as Doom 2016, but its fun, and is replayable... no complaints...

The DLC's were a gigantic waste of money that I tried so hard to enjoy... I'll be honest... I'm a raving fan girl with ID Software carved into my bones... I let that cloud my judgement... the Denuvo thing I think was the first crack where I was really angry at the Devs and at the game cause it ran worse and worse every Denuvo patch... but I think more so it was me realizing Doom Eternal just... wasn't as good as I was trying to force myself into thinking it was.

The DLC's are a Gallery of bad game design, the enemies it adds don't add challenge or variety, they pigeon hole you into very specific tactics that you eventually commit to muscle memory, but they're never fun, they're an annoyance... the DLC enemies were a build up of annoyance after annoyance until you got to the final boss, the king of utter annoyance... again, not hard at all, but extremely boring to fight. The DLC's did sort of make me remember something though... that until they were released... I played through the campaign a handful of times, and never really touched them again aside from a couple of levels.

then I realized because the levels I replayed were fun... and the rest of the base campaign was... annoying... mind you I can clear the campaign without dying, it wasn't so much that it was too difficult, its just when I got into a groove... into that saught after "Fun Zone" a combo of enemies... or specific enemies would spawn in forcing me to focus them and dodge around until they were dealt with... or I would run out of ammo for my favorite guns, switching to guns I absolutely despise [but are absolutely necessary to use... I have the Ballista P-Bolt Combo committed to muscle memory and I hate both guns]... I played Battle mode and hit a 17 win streak as a Marauder with my friend being a Revenant... got bored.. never picked up battlemode again... its trash.

Then I play Horde mode... which isn't a real Horde mode so it already pissed me off there... instead its just a mini campaign that rehashes levels, and brings in the DLC enemies... and when I'm limitted to just the single shotty... I realize that... Doom Eternal is only fun in very specific moments and is mostly a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ slog... that nostalgia and my love of Doom made me force myself to like it so much, but when you peel back the skin its just an annoying overdone, bloated mess.

anyone else hit this realization? I played a bit of Doom 2016 recently, and it still just feels better than DE... it lets me tackle things my own way, it isn't an annoying mess of over stimulation and didn't need to over complicate a winning formula... I feel DE is OVER designed... that Hugo couldn't just trust the player to enjoy themselves playing... its not really hand holding, that wouldn't be the term for it, but it feels like the game is playing you more than you are playing it, because it demands such specifics... like each play through feels EXACTLY the same where Doom 2016 you can approach things with a different touch each time.

any thoughts?

I think you just can't handle any game that isn't brainless.

And you are wrong anyway. There are numerous viable options to killing in Eternal. Where as im willing to bet you use no more than two guns in 2016. Just like everyone that tries to make the "limits my creativity" argument.

If i may say. i think your trying to hard to like eternal. simply cuz it has dooms name on it.

With doom internal they tried to Branch out and do a little bit more of a faster pace game play.

And it does force your hand intoo learning weapon combos and such.
In an effort to be able to make the game as sufficiently fast as possible.

Personally I love the direction that they have taken the game in.
However that's me. And despite what the Beatles say I am not you as you are not me.

Don't try too hard to like a game that you're not liking. Just cus you *loved the old games*
Games are meant to be fun. play what you enjoy! if you try to force your self to play something your not truly enjoying your just setting your self up for more for frustration and disappointment.

IDK if what im saying is gonna help or hurt.
Just my opinion on the matter.

I wish you the best <3

I realized all that and more when eternal came out.

first I hated it with a passion, then I tried to embrace all the new mechanics (after all I wasted good money on it mostly because of D16) sorta liked it for a while but ultimately came back to same conclusions.

It´s just a very narrow loop with artificial annoyances and a few extra tricks that get old pretty fast but not only that, level design, game design, presentation, story, everything is full of very questionable decisions and extra fat everywhere whereas D16 was a lot more focused, tight and straight.

not gonna repeat myself in details here as I already wrote too much about it.
that said the main campaign is kinda okay if you are in the mood for something like this… and I even liked Tag1 because when I played it I was deep into the “loop” and UAC atlantica and swamp were fine levels but Tag2 is where everything fell apart again..

going back to some classics and having a lot more of good old fun again without all the extra fluff and crap of eternal made me realize again how much I really don´t like the new direction id went with.

so much that for the first time I am gonna be very careful with buying the next id title without double or triple checking before that I might really enjoy it.

except I play Hunt Showdown, and used to competitively play Starcraft Brood war and Total Annihilation. Its not that I don't like complexity, its just I don't like complexity for complexity's sake... You can't force depth because when you do, you end up creating a bunch of annoyances that build up over time. The Stone Imps for example are completely worthless... theres only 2 things that kill them, The hammer is simple enough but they force you to switch your shotgun from the useful grenades to the utterly worthless "I have no Ammo" Auto Shotgun. The Curse Prowler is just a beacon of terrible game design... its literally just there to piss you off and doesn't add anything to the game's strategy and the screechers are just a noob trap, to trick you into thinking you're getting ammo only to buff the room. all of these things add up to an annoying ass experience... As easy as the Marauder is, hes still annoying because he doesn't always throw out the move you need to counter... sometimes he just stares at you with his shield... farting dogs constantly, never taking a wack... he rail roads you... forcing you to approach him in a very particular fashion its not hard.. at all... I don't think I've died by a Marauder since the first fight with one, and then later when I started losing focus from boredom of the Horde mode. The Spirit I hate with a passion as its easier to just avoid the posessed demon rather than deal with it head on because of how long the Microwave beam takes to kill it... the Microwave beam... which is a mod I find to be largely useless compared to the other one. If you enjoy playing the game, more power to you, but I don't like being so directed so strictly during a fight, I like having to think rather than just react... and thats all you do... you see the Spirit, you pull out the Microwave... you see the Stone Imp... you pull out the rotary shotgun... Marauder up your ass... you pull out the Ballista and dance around him... Caco Demons, you pull out the stickies... Makyr drones... just head shot with the PB or Ballista... Mancubus' Shoot out their guns and leave them to use up a spawn slot for the demons... its tedious.

They really did the Caco demon dirty

I love this game and pretty much everything about it. I can totally understand why some people don't like it (or things about it) though.

I think the OP is correct that it does go it's own direction and moves away from the classic Doom formula that 2016 modernized so beautifully.

I appreciate this game for what it is though instead of being critical of what it isn't. I believe the gameplay is some of the most fun of any shooter I've ever played. The action is visceral and satisfying in a way most games never achieve.

It's not very Doom-ish in that classic style anymore but I still love it. So I get you OP, even though I don't agree with you.

I think it's fine to prefer D2016, each to their own. It sounds like you got 100 hours + out of Eternal, not bad value for a primarily single player game. If it doesn't appeal any more, I guess don't play it. I uninstalled D2016 after about a month of playing Eternal, and still haven't felt the urge to re-install it.

Well, you folks seem to care, to the point of even reply. Let the dude share his opinion, liking it or not.

Kinda agree. Doom Eternal is a lot of fun and very well put together. I do love the gameplay and the flow and I love the fact that you don't have to rely on pickups to win the game. They give you all the tools in your arsenal.

However, I gotta be in the mood to play this because of how stressful it can get or how long fights take sometime. Doom 2016 or other Doom games, I never really felt like I had to stop playing and take a break. This game though... Its so good, but it can be so draining to me. On top of that, I only recently started The Ancient Gods DLC, completed part 1 last night. Started up part 2 this morning and seeing the steel imp demons only being vulnerable to the full auto shotgun made me realize that they are legitimately forcing players to just use specific mods regardless of how unfun or boring those mods are. Like, why are the steel imps vulnerable to the full auto, but not rocket launchers or the stronger double shotgun? Just kinda boring to deal with.

Definitely an amazing game, but definitely something I gotta be in the mood for to want to play.

Classic 90s Doom is still king by far. Never ending content and I have over 10k hours easy.

Despite what some people say (and some people will undoubtedly say, for better, or more likely worse), you (OP) bring up a lot of good and viable points (as does Neon-FlowerPower-<3).

As OriginOrange says though, classic Doom all the way (although by that I mean on a modern source-port and mods all from tiny to complete overhauls, not like actually playing on an old DOS machine >_<)

I agree on pretty much every point.
Doom 2016 is one of my favorite games of all time, but Doom Eternal just has too much going on and ends up taking away a lot of choice from the player. I think the trouble is that Doom 2016 was already over-the-top (in a good way) but the devs tried to 1-up it with Eternal, which just took the game too far. I would have loved a much more down-to-earth version of Doom Eternal that felt more like a sequel to Doom 2016, but instead we got a goofy arcade shooter with way too much.
