diablo 1 never had a one-life mode, it never had a hardcore mode, and it never had a permadeath mode (be it default or otherwise).
it was only added to the series in diablo 2.
I think it is the only way it never had a "softcore" mode because games back there at PC were also sold with physical copies and were not updated either to fix mistakes.
I know I played Diablo 1 the "hardcore way" because of lack of memory card (btw, in my country it was normal to buy a PS without menory card because it was not made here and those selling wanted tk make as much profit possible from each part, what mean some even had to buy the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ controllers separated, lol ... ) but I am not that stupid to assume the game would not allow me to save. I remember I reached area lvl 14 once ... was greeted and died, a second time where I farmed more, maybe I have reached to lvl 15 but I dont actually remember going beyond lvl 14 without memory card, lol.
Once I got a memory card, well, I did not have to restart from ground zero every time.
Btw, I did not play D1 at PC, just at PS1, but it never was meant to be played as Hardcore mode as devs sure taken into count people would have memory card to save it.
If Dixon vividly remember it never having ... his game either had a bug or he played at PS1 without a memory card.
Actually, it's the opposite. Softcore was standard and there was no option to play Hardcore.
Maybe you just never realized you could simply save the game
You are absolutely high if you think D3 was at "it's best" on day 1. And if you think Hardcore mode was enjoyable or beatable in 30 hours on Inferno... just lol. I beat vanilla Inferno on non-hardcore without the RMAH, and even as a fan of the series it was in general a horrible experience.
D3 launch was a mess. Between the "error 44" issue, RMAH disaster, massive balancing problems and all sorts of other issues, the wailing and screams of anger on the internet were absolutely legendary. People were NOT happy with vanilla D3.
D3 became an amazing game with RoS released which fixed basically everything with vanilla, which was a lot.
You're also hilariously wrong about basically everything else you've said about the series.
Do you even play Diablo?
