I agree. I think it will work like a aoe weapon, so it will cover some ground instead of killing one heavy demon.
It even has upgrades just like other weapons. Definitely not a crucible reskin.
Hence the achievement for collecting Sentinel Hammer Ammo/charges and not upgrades.

Imagine getting weapon upgrades by picking up ammo crates :) And I wasted all that time collecting Weapon Upgrade points...
If the description strings in the games files are correct then it's definitely not a crutch. DLC 2 is going to be even harder than part 1, I don't doubt we may need it just like how we need the chainsaw or falter system. Unless those are crutches too, of course.
While you're breaking your keyboard in frustration trying for the 100th time to Ultra-Nightmare the DLC I'll be merrily bashing demons into pulp with a fun new toy. Buy hey, if you consider that fun, go for it. I'm sure your gaming accomplishments will really matter 1,000 years from now.
