The Ancient Gods Part 2 is a mixed bag
Instead of the usual "TAG2 Bad" type of crap i'll just put a list and my thoughts what i find wrong with it

Leves are short and forgettable:
Compared to TAG1 the levels are much shorter, some will enjoy shorter lengths of the levels and some won't, i can understand that and i would've been on the former if the levels had more going for something like more creative platforming or maybe even continued TAG1's extreme difficulty

Really bland recycled boss:
Ok that's where nearly all of my disappointment came from: The Dark Lord boss fight was a massive let down because it just boils down to Marauder with extra steps (Green eye glow at medium distance, activate shields when shooting at him, summons wolves but it's 2 wolves and heavy demons at later stages), all of the stages are just the same but with extra steps and was expecting the Dark Lord to be an actual multi stage boss battle where each stage you remove parts of his armor and need to keep changing your strategy (I.E like Lords of Cinder or Mr. Freeze from Arkham City), he would've been my fav boss of all time and would've looked past the story and the REALLY annoying self healing if you do any mistake and that just drags the battle to really unnecessary lengths (Took me like 10 to 12 mins to beat)

Story that went no where:
This is the part where i put least attention and could've just overlooked everything to but it felt really jarring at times especially that they didn't do much with the Avenger Endgame style final battle and the wasted opportunities where they could've intergrated the story with the gameplay seamlessly like Doomslayer could've had some difficult arena battles to help the giant mech to beat the giant demon or maybe redeeming The Betrayer like sacrifices himself to give the hammer or maybe just piloted that ballista tank that shoots you through the wall but that's just me

Ending thoughts: While overall it could've done much better and leaves me with lots of mixed feelings but at the end it still gives me some hope for the next Doom game where they could perfect their masterpiece franchise even further

I liked the first two levels. The new enemies are a lot of fun. The new platforming was a lot of fun. And I can't wait to see them in master levels.

Immora/boss fight were dissapointing yes. And I think the hammer is OP. But just like the other super weapons I can just not use it.

But the real problem is they nerfed TAG1 Nightmare.

I was kinda hoping for some sort of Shadow Mario stuff where copies you and you'd have to try and best yourself, literally.

Exactly my expectations when i reach the final stage of the boss

i'm not sure what the deal is with id and boss fights. the cyberdemon and spider mastermind were actually pretty fun in 2016, and pretty much every boss fight in eternal and the dlc's is crappy. Samur is straight garbage, and this is coming from someone who adores this game almost religiously. i was expecting a duel with the dark lord having access to your weaponry and skillset or something akin to that. hell, even differing fights with each stage like you said would have been great.

dlc2 is incredibly dissapointing, specially after dlc1 and sgn ml

the worst thing of all is that update 5 messed up a lot of stuff, the only necesary nerf was the blood maykr and it was a bit too much

all the rebalance should be applied for all diffs but nightmare, if ID wants to catter casual players, right, do it, but dont mess with skilled players, we only play on nightmare or ultra nightmare, and casual players dont go past ultra violence

I loved it all even the boss, he's tedious but not terrible.

The new demons are very fun and interesting, new baron is so enjoyable to fight.

The levels i do enjoy but reclaimed earth felt kinda short but immora's intro is just so good, i think immora is pretty good, disappointed with the hell soldiers tho.

The hammer is such a good tool that it pretty much makes most fights not that tough seeing that it's a panic button.

I liked it but I do think compared to Ancient Gods 1, it feels... well... "cheap". None of it is bad by any stretch of the imagination, but I feel like much of the budget went into Immora, which I guess makes sense.

The World Spear is a good level, but it's missing something. It's weirdly paced compared to Ancient Gods Part 1. It's almost too serene... too easy. The second half of the level (after the Dragon ride) is far better than the first half. I'm thinking they wanted to just do a woodlands style map. Thing is, it's not Doom (or at least the good parts).

Reclaimed Earth is a bad level. Probably one of the worst in all of Doom Eternal. It's washed out and sterile. I get what they were trying to do, but it doesn't work. It comes off looking cheap and rushed.

Immora is an all round excellent level. I wish it were longer though. But the idea of a "Hell Ruling class" living in a technologically advanced civilization was pretty great, even though a lot of the interior geometry is recolored Makyr tech.

As far as enemies go... again... kind of cheap. Cursed Prowler, Stone Imp and Screecher are all cool enemies, but they're straight forward palette swaps of original monsters. Again... "cheap". I do like to think the Stone Imp is a reimagined version of the Doom 64 Nightmare Imp.

The Riot Soldier is a good reimagining of the Doom 2 Chaingunner. They just need to attack more. They don't do much. They just sand their with their shield. This game and its shields is annoying. It would be a better enemy if it just attacked a lot and was dangerous to get in line of sight of. But it is "all new". So that's one.

The Demonic Troopers.... I don't understand the point of these guys. They just explode. But I'm pretty sure their art assets are pulled over from Doom 2016 multiplayer. Soooo. kinda cheap.

The Armored Baron is all neew on the outside, b ut the inside is the old Baron. I like i. It's a good addition.

So in terms of enemies, there is really like, 1.5 all new assets. Of course, the Dark Lord is all new too.

Weapons? Well... the hammer, which is awesome.

Is it bad? No not at all. But Ancient Gods Part 1 was lavishly done. This feels like a real good rough draft.

I think the next thing they should do is retrofit the additions and mob pacing from Ancient Gods Part 1 and 2 into the base game.

imma be real, unless im rusty as ♥♥♥♥, it still feels hard even with the new changes
it feels like the spirit begins to posess other demons MUCH QUICKER to compensate for the lack of more higher power demons, which i kind of like, tests reflexes a lot better and relies on you having that microwave beam ready at all costs

i get the changes bothering people (i saw noone talk about this but they did similar things to the base game on nightmare) but im not bothered personally. the game still kicks my ass which is all that matters. unless im bad. in which case whatever lol. im still having fun, that's all that matters.

dlc is piss easy, im on starter skilled level, quitted the game almost 3 weeks because i wanted to get wrecked, ended up playing the dlc on auto

im dissapointed, but i wouldnt be mad if it wasnt for all the unnecesary demon nerfs and re balance of dlc1

The way they implemented the Sentinel Hammer is pure genious, in my opinion. Sure, it makes you much stronger, making the DLC noticeably easier than TAG1 and on par with the campaign, but how can you resist, say, dashing face-first into a mancubus, smashing it with a hammer, shooting off both of its cannons and doing another hammer drop, all while being surrounded by stunned demons that you set on fire earlier? It's fun - more fun than TAG1 was, - and that's all that really matters to me. It's a shame that TAG2 is so short, because I'd love some more hammer action.

the hammer being as OP as it is is what killed the fun for me and most of the playerbase
Equo Mar 19, 2021 @ 10:26pm
Steam forums do not represent the entire player base. Hell, they don't even represent 15% of it, judging by the same annoying "lol mario platforming" and "i hate marauder, pls remove" crap that still keeps popping up, almost a year after release.

Worst final boss ever... tedious and boring as hell

Yeah.. as much as I enjoy Doom Eternal, the boss fights never really feel 'right'.

Same here, 2016 bosses felt simple and good and worked well, shoot the boss, dodge attacks and kept simple instead of moronic gimmick fights that are not enjoyable and make no sense.

Eternal's boss fights always suck and are so so uninspired, worst contender really is simply all of them but Khan Maykr fight stuck out to me as absolutely braindead

Finished it on UV. Started again on nightmare, it's much better on that difficulty. Fights are much more hectic than before, I love the hammer and juggling so many abilities to wreck all the enemies.
