Help! Quick Switch Tips PLZ
I have had the game for about a month now. I have finally moved onto nightmare difficulty, and I am slowly realizing that I can't use mouse wheel anymore. It's too slow and I a stuck with using Rocket launcher, SSG, and Ballista when facing tougher enemies. I don't want to make this a bad habit, but I need to find a simple keybind. All of my keybinds are default except clicking mousewheel is my interact/melee/glory kill. Any suggestions?

this is what i use:

q - ballista
e - ssg
r - rocket launcher
z - chaingun

rest is whatever and you can play around with it until you find a comfortable setup.

if you're not using f for interact then you can put something like the heavy cannon there.

I think my keyboard kinda sucks tho. Using the mouse wheel is a lot faster at just effectively switching and firing than when I use keybinds. Should I try to get used to the keybinds? Or buy a new keyboard?

dunno what you mean by "sucks" but quick-switching is objectively faster than using the mouse-wheel. still, it does take time to get used to it and get in the groove.

I recommend looking up some video tutorials on how to quick-swap effectively. It's much easier to learn when you have visuals to go along with it. This video helped me a lot:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_iQn4DQJVg

I also recommend experimenting with the key binds to find what works best for you.

The hardest thing I had to learn was Precision Bolt combos (especially PB+Sticky Grenades) as you have to figure out a rhythm, which changes depending on the weapon you're swapping between, for example, the swapping rhythm between PB+Rockets is faster than PB+SSG or Ballista.

TBH even after hundreds of hours I still have occasional trouble with quick-swapping so don't feel bad if you're having a hard time with it.

Good luck in your practice.

My personal keybinds are:
Mouse wheel up: SSG
Mouse wheel down: Ballista
Q: combat shotgun
F: heavy cannon
Z: chaingun
X: BFG
V: crucible
Left side button (mouse5): rocket launcher
Right side button (mouse4): plasma rifle
Weapon mod swap: Y
Weapon wheel (never use it): T
Swap equipment: CAPS
Chainsaw: C
Equipment: LCTRL
Flame belch: R

The first 2 are ones I recommend to anyone as it makes doing SSG + ballista combo's much easier for beginners.

I used to be in the same boat as you but eternal made me do what no other shooter has ever forced me to do which is learn how to use keybinds for weapon switching.
It may be hard at first but it's just memorizing and muscle memory, and there is absolutely no way you can do quickswitch combo's with just using the regular mouse wheel switching.

Wow you have (kinda) the same binds for the plasma gun and rocket launcher as me.
Kyoki Jul 30, 2021 @ 8:03am
My keybinds:
Q - Crucible/Hammer
Mouse 3 - Grenades
Mouse 4 - Melee
Mouse 5 - BFG
1 - Combat Shotgun
2 - Heavy Cannon
3 - Plasma
4 - Chaingun
5 - SSG
Z - Balista
X - Rocket launcher
G - Equipment Switch
C - Flamebelch
R - Mod swap
Shift - Dash
Tab - Meniu

My mouse wheel is a bit busted so i can't really put weapon binds on it :D

Quick switching is good. Dealing damage fast is a very important thing to shorten fight time and making enemies unable to hit you.
But the most important when playing on nightmare or ultra nightmare is to know what you do. Knowing how to kill each enemy and avoiding them is more important than taking damage.
You have to use your equipment launcher, your blood punch and the guns against the right enemies.
Moving around the arenas is key to winning.

The 3 most important weapons when quick switching are rpg, ballista and shotgun.
You can do more advanced quick switching with the other weapons, but the first step is to use those 3. So binding them to 1-2-3 could be a good idea, but not really required. I still just use the default binding for weapons.

For me I never understood how people can comfortably switch weapons using the number keys, they're way too far away from where my hands are on a WASD layout.
Like 1 and 2 are okay but anything farther than that is insanity.

My keybinds for weapons are in order of most common usage to least common, everything not listed is default:

1 - Super Shotgun
2 - Ballista
3 - Heavy Cannon
4 - Rocket Launcher
5 - Plasma Rifle
Z - Combat Shotgun
X - Chaingun
T - BFG

This also lets you do the SSG/Ballista combo most easily without even needing to hit the weapon wheel button.

For me anything beyond 5 is too far. I'd say ideally you don't want any hotkeys to be beyond column 5 (5, T, G, and B). Or, more flexibly, anything past the limit of which you can reach your index finger over while your middle finger is still on W without lifting your wrist. For me, that is number key 5. The less necessary wrist movement, the better,

Admittedly I do occasionally somehow skip over 4, like I hit 3 and/or 5 while trying to hit 4, but that's because my fine motor skills are kinda ♥♥♥♥ sometimes.
