How do I play?
Hi guys,

I recently started playing PC games after almost 2 decades. I got Doom: Eternal, The Witcher 3 and other games. I am very confused by the controls and wonder how to remember what the different keys on the keyboard stand for after the tutorial part ends. Also what do the numbers (score) and indicators stand for in Doom: Eternal?

I really want to be able to play. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

You can check your control in "Slayer keybinds" in controls. As for remembering them - well that is mostly muscle memory. As for the indicators on the hud... well - you just have to remember and learn them - lower left and right are your equipment cooldowns and your ammo ect, upper left is your corruption meter - it shows how much combat encounters you cleared in the level and grants you weapon upgrade points, mid upper screen is your compass to not get lost in the level, upper right is your extra life counter - which shows how many unused extra lives you got.

The exp you get at the end of levels goes to your profile level and another exp type levels up current events for stuff to unlock in the current event/series.

If you need gameplay tips later - just ask - most of us are friendly and happy to help.
Although we got a couple of trolls on the board so keep that in mind aswell.

Many controls are written on your screen on top of certain indicators. For example, the bar that shows you the recharge state of your Flame Belch ability will also tell you what key it is. This might help you remember.

Some controls aren't shown, like your weapon keys, but you can just use the weapon wheel to choose weapons (hold Q).

If you ever need a refresher on your controls, you can view them in settings. They'll be listed under "Customize Slayer Keybinds" in the controls menu.

Good couple of games to start PC gaming with.

Best bet will be to rebind your keys to suit you. Movement I guess you will have on WASD, jump on SPACEBAR. You will need to have melee/glorykill, dash, grenade, flamebelch, use/switch weapon mod and chainsaw bound to keys around WASD. You will also need to bind weapon selection, perhaps on mouse wheel or number keys for quick switching.

There are quite a lot of keys needed quite regularly so it will maybe take some time for you to figure out where the keys are best bound.

i've rebound a number of things to my extra mouse buttons but I'm already used to the controls.

After playing the 2016 DOOM this game will feel like a tutorial at least until you get all the guns. It's just gonna take time and practice.

Remember of the basics of most games:
WASD for movement
SPACEBAR for jump
SHIFT for run/dash
CTRL for crouch
QERFGZXCV (all keys arround the movement keys) for action keys
E is the most commonly used for "basic action key"
I for inventory
M for map

And you will be fine at all "action" PC games.

Wow, really?
Try playing the tutorial first. Also, check the key bindings. You may customize it as you see fit. Play the game on the easiest difficulty to familiarize yourself with the game mechanics and controls.

As a new PC player you might wanna start with something less hectic so you can pace yourself and learn your way around the keyboard and mouse better. Most FPS's will involve using the same keybinds. Its takes time getting used to keyboard. Also, if your you're coming from console maybe you should trying pluggin up a Xbox controller or something, Doom Eternal has controller support, so does the Witcher 3. Just find whats comfortable and ignore the asshats. Cheers mate, hope you enjoy PC gaming.

Thanks for all your kind replies and help. Yes, I am playing on the easiest setting. I’ve never played on consoles like PS & Xbox. But in the 80’s I had an Atari 2600 that my dad had got me when I was a kid. So that’s probably not worth counting. I will try to use the keyboard first and then see later on if I want a console or controller.

Thanks again. Hope to hang out more here.

It's mostly just muscle memory with the keybinds, the more you play the more naturally it goes and eventually you'll no longer have to look for the keys and can blindly use them.
WASD and learning how to comfortably place your hand around these keys is the most important thing you'll need to get learn and get used to if you want to get into pc gaming.

I would say check the controls on the menu and take it slow, most people suffer the same when going for a controller so I guess coming from controller to k+m is the same. Most keys you will find are very common among all games so it will start feeling natural. Good luck.
