I absolutely love the art direction this game is going in
I know i'm in a minority, but i despise the washed up colors, oranges and grays of D2016 and
D3.

It's boring and doesn't have much variety. I much prefer the aesthetics of the classic games and DE. It looks so varied and colorful.

Another good thing about looking somewhat cartoony is that it allows for more freedom in terms of designs.

Flying around with a shotgun chain while colorful ammo explodes out of enemy guts like confetti would look awkward with a realistic and dark art style.

People say that DE looks childish and kiddy and I think that's a stupid assumption. What does childish even mean?
Colorful? If being vibrant means being childish, then in that case Mortal Kombat is childish.

The original doom games were never dark and gritty. They had that somewhat-ironic action hero vibe where nothing was taken TOO seriously.

IDK if a marine having his pet bunny killed by demons out of nowhere and going on an awesome rampage is very 'realistic' as people call the dark artstyle.

But i respect the opinion of those who dislike it, Even the marauder's stars around his head when he gets stunned

Are you the minority? I only see a few very loud people think 2016 is a better game in any regard. The majority seems to agree DE is better.

If anything 2016 looks childish. Its the definition if teenage angst. There is nothing about DE appealing to anyone under the age of 18 visually the idea is a bit preposterous.

Agreed. Bet they'd assume i'm 8 from my profile picture of Spider-man; They don't know that it's from an 80s comic

I like my games with character and varied/colourful artstyle, which Eternal excels at. Then again, most of my favourite games have a distinct artstyle: Serious Sam (First and second encounter), old doom games, Borderlands, Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc, Terraria, hell, even the silent hill games (The og 4) have varied and different maps with their own distinct artstyle.

Yep, Both games have their own appeal. Doom eternal takes a more colorful, gamey and pleasing to the eye look while DOOM 2016 looks more serious, edgy and industrial- Like something from a horror movie

I do enjoy 2016 quite a lot, but i have a similar issue with it as i have with Borderlands: The Presequel. Which is.... repetitive maps. As most of them just blend in together. With only "Vega Core" really standing out.

Eternal's art direction is great. The sharp and diverse colour palette just makes the game feel much more alive and like it has much more clarity, and it's easy to tell what is going on with the fast paced combat. It helps that we don't spend too much time on Mars or Hell.
I think it will probably age better than 2016's style, even if that one is more "realistic".

I recently played Call of Juarez Gunslinger, which goes for a cel-shaded look, and while it looks good, it's a bit hard for me to make out enemies in that game.

I still like the style of the less vibrant Doom games despite this, it's really fun how different the Doom games can look. I don't think Doom was ever a series that was meant to be taken too seriously, but it was always badass and fun. The Doom games all have impressive visuals to me though.

Yeah, it's a great game for sure. Good memories.

I think the DOOM 4 aesthetic is cool enough, but it just doesn't feel right. It doesn't really fit with the DOOM game-play. It's hard to differentiate enemies from the background in fast & tense moments.

It's like all UAC levels look the same, all Mars levels look the same, all Hell levels look the same.
It's not inherently bad... but oh god I cannot differentiate or distinguish any DOOM 4 levels at the top of my head. They all just kinda looked and mostly played the same...

I remember when DOOM Eternal just released, people were throwing over tablets & stools 'cause the Cacodemon burps.
??????????
Same goes for the release of The Ancient Gods part 2. When the Marauder got the stars... geez, people were ready to get real hostile and flip their entire house over.

None of these effects are meaningless. They all serve a game-play purpose.
Mid-fight it can be hard to see if the Cacodemon swallowed the grenade. So the little detail can be useful for instant information.

Also the Marauder's stars, as Hugo explained, were added for newcomers originally did not know they could shoot the Marauder more than once while staggered. So this is an indication.

Also i prefer the DOOM Eternal look :staxelCat:

I don't mind the stars but lately they have been bugging out for me and they remain even after Marauder gets unstunned.

The Cacodemon easy staggers does trivialise the enemies a bit but they're still pretty dangerous and it's one of the better ways the game tries to teach its mechanics.

i prefer 2016's look (especially the hud) but doom eternal's gameplay is miles better.

To be fair, caco's in this game are the most agressive they have ever been, and if you don't stun them with a nade or arbalest them, they can be a massive threat, that chomp does mad damage.

That's really odd. I've never encountered that bug myself. Unlucky for you. Have you possibly reported it to ID somehow?

Yeah I agree with you on the Cacodemon. But I also don't often shoot grenades at them anymore unless in hefty deathly fights — Or unless it's early-game. Otherwise I feel they die too easily for my mastery. I just plow them with my attacks normally haha

A disagreeable opinion, but it's still a valid one to hold. I can respect it even if I digress.

When i see people complain about things being too 'childish' it makes me want to scream. People are acting like its the end of the world because of the new stun effect rofl. I don't want no colors in my big boy game!
