I'm not sure if you are mixing up difficulties or what. Ultra Nightmare is perma death mode. Is that what you meant by "max difficulty" that you never finished on Doom 2016? It's also a difficulty you can play only after you finish the campaign once. If you attempted Doom 2016 on Ultra Nightmare you can easily start Eternal on Nightmare.

maybe i dont remember the names but I played it on the max diffuclty where perma death wasnt a thing and then the diffculty before that I kind of want a hard diffculty but not a diffculty where im just stuck in the same areafor 10 hours

Play it on whatever you think gives you the most fun.

This means you played Doom 2016 on nightmare and ultra violence. You should begin Doom Eternal on ultra violence and raise the difficulty to nightmare as soon as you feel your skill has adapted to the new game mechanics

Try Nightmare and if it's too hard tone it down. I even started on UV after having played 2016 on NM and I struggled a lot. But after a short time I could switch to NM without big issues. Just try it out and see what you're comfortable with.

So you played through Doom 2016 on UV, and get halfway on Nightmare. I'd say try Eternal on UV. You will get bored quickly on lower difficulties, but Eternal Nightmare is much harder than 2016 Nightmare until you adapt.

I would say - no matter the skill level - try it on UV or NM and simply lower the difficulty if it gets too rough. That is why we can change the difficulty in options at any time.

Unless you are uncomfortable with this kind of shooter. Then do it like me - start with the easiest difficulty, learn the game on subsequent playthroughs, and you'll master it eventually.

Yup, better to realize that earlier than later. So by all means keep playing with it until things feel right (i.e deaths will happen, but not so much you want to quit the game), and then when you get better you can up the difficulty. You will improve faster than you realize.

Doom Eternal is a totally different monster than 2016. I always recommend UV for a first play through if you're a Doom or FPS vet. Then up it to Nightmare or UN for your subsequent play throughs. Hurt Me Plenty is still fun too if you're having difficulty with the pace of Eternal.

Play on ITYTD then work your way up to nightmare.

It's all about first 3 levels. If you go with highest difficulty, that's where you will learn everything or die trying. If you are the kind of person who has patience and don't get discouraged by death and you like to learn from it instead, then go for highest difficulty. But considering you tried that in 2016 and never finished it I think it might be better you go with Ultra Violence.
