Which Is More Iconic: BFG 9000 or Super Shotgun?
Which of the following weapons do you feel is more iconic, BFG 9000 or Super Shotgun? including Doom 2016 and Eternal.

Personally for me it is the Super Shotgun. For some reason it feels more balanced and useful than the BFG.

Correction: I meant through all games.

Well... BFG has been in the game since the first one, the name is iconic and instantly recognizable, not to mention it exists in both of the biggest franchises from ID, and every boomer shooter seems to have one super weapon which works similar to it.

However. When someone mentions a super shotgun - i think everyones first thought is Doom (Especially doom 2 - as that gun there is one of the best ssg's ever in any game).

As for balance, well... Super weapons are kinda boring in most games once you get good enough - which means guns like BFG9000 get thrown to the side by the time you get good enough. SSG meanwhile - while one of the most powerful weapons of the game, is more balanced towards the rest of your arsenal, so of course it will be used more (Unless you play Brawler + or something where it's banned :D).

Iconic through both Doom 2016 and Eternal? Neither. I don't think being in a span of 2 games in the last 5 years can be classified as iconic.

Through the whole franchise? BFG since it came first and for literally what those initials mean, it's known even outside of the Doom universe.

Super shotgun is used a lot more through the Doom games, and is one of the most recognizable shotguns in video game history.
However, the BFG has a way more iconic name, design, and sounds, to the point where even people who don't play Doom can recognize it instantly.
So yeah, I think the BFG wins this round, there's a reason why it's called Doom 3: BFG edition :winter2019cooldog:

It's close. I think the BFG gets the edge with the sheer number of references in other games and media to it.

That said, the SSG is the workhorse of the arsenal. It's the ultimate Shotgun, and the ultimate testament to just how good id is at making powerful boomsticks... usually. There's a good reason the Slayer wields that thing so frequently, and I think it's more than just the fact that the BFG is kind of unwieldy.

Neither - those are two parts of the same FPS coin, one cant work without another.

The SSG obviously, someone who has never played or seen a doom game wouldn't know what the BFG is whereas the SSG got so popular thanks to doom 2 that it's in almost every fps game today.

If it's just DOOM 2016 & DOOM Eternal - it's gotta be the SSG since it's basically great for any situation AND you can constantly refill ammo for it. BFG ammo is too scarce to make much of an impact besides the few times that you need/want to use it.

If it's throughout the series (and including Quake) it'd probably be BFG.

I feel Super Shotgun is more iconic. I mean a flaming meathook? Something that actually pulls you towards the enemy and lights them on fire? Can you imagine something more emblematic of this game's core philosophy and theme?

Even the name "Super Shotgun" is reminiscent of an arcadey, colorful era in gaming, which Doom Eternal clearly leans into.

The BFG might be more iconic for the Doom Franchise, but the SSG in this game is more iconic for Doom Eternal.

The BFG might be more iconic, but it's no fun. The super shotgun is super.

Super Shotgun has become Doomguy's Excalibur but I feel the BFG is more broadly known.

Mainly because most people could figure out what it stands for.

BFG is fun too, though I enjoy it more in the classic games tbf.

Also, the Super Shotgun might be Super but the BFG is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

bfg

the super shotgun is just a double barreled shotgun, i dunno how it can be considered "iconic"

A lot of people ITT aren’t aware that original BFG is basically a Super Super Shotgun, and a lot of skill goes into using it properly (like two-shotting Cyberdemons): https://youtube.com/watch?v=MsCqLQJ1EOc
