However. When someone mentions a super shotgun - i think everyones first thought is Doom (Especially doom 2 - as that gun there is one of the best ssg's ever in any game).
As for balance, well... Super weapons are kinda boring in most games once you get good enough - which means guns like BFG9000 get thrown to the side by the time you get good enough. SSG meanwhile - while one of the most powerful weapons of the game, is more balanced towards the rest of your arsenal, so of course it will be used more (Unless you play Brawler + or something where it's banned :D).
Through the whole franchise? BFG since it came first and for literally what those initials mean, it's known even outside of the Doom universe.
However, the BFG has a way more iconic name, design, and sounds, to the point where even people who don't play Doom can recognize it instantly.
So yeah, I think the BFG wins this round, there's a reason why it's called Doom 3: BFG edition
That said, the SSG is the workhorse of the arsenal. It's the ultimate Shotgun, and the ultimate testament to just how good id is at making powerful boomsticks... usually. There's a good reason the Slayer wields that thing so frequently, and I think it's more than just the fact that the BFG is kind of unwieldy.
If it's throughout the series (and including Quake) it'd probably be BFG.
Even the name "Super Shotgun" is reminiscent of an arcadey, colorful era in gaming, which Doom Eternal clearly leans into.
The BFG might be more iconic for the Doom Franchise, but the SSG in this game is more iconic for Doom Eternal.
Mainly because most people could figure out what it stands for.
You mean Excalibur?
BFG is fun too, though I enjoy it more in the classic games tbf.
Also, the Super Shotgun might be Super but the BFG is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
the super shotgun is just a double barreled shotgun, i dunno how it can be considered "iconic"
