Are empowered demons even "real"?
I was under the impression that an empowered demon is one that has recently killed another player. I've played through the main story 3 times now (twice on UV, once on Nightmare) and with about 2 exceptions, all the empowered demon spawns have been the same.

Off the top of my head, there's always an empowered Pinky when you first get he rad suit in Super Gore Nest, and an empowered Cacodemon on Mars Core, just before the area with BFG ammo and two barons.

Even in the DLC, the empowered demons seem intentionally placed to hinder you, such as the Mancubus in the hallway in Atlantica.

I don't mind the extra challenge, but is the premise of this mechanic just a lie? Are these really demons that killed other players? If so, why are they always the same in my game? Is there a way to force the game to update and spawn different ones?

They used to be demons that killer players. They also used to display the name of the slayer they killed, this was changed in update 2 and can also be assumed the original idea was taken out as well.

As far as I know, they still represent demons that killed other players - but *only* who have killed other players on your Steam or Bethesda friendslists.

If you don't have a lot of active Eternal players on your friendslist, then yes, of course you'll see the same empowereds again. They haven't been playing, and hence haven't been dying, in order to change what you're seeing.

I have a large friendslist and a lot of active players - the empowered demons are almost always different except for a few particularly tricky ones that everyone seems to have trouble with.

I don't have any friends with doom eternal, so your theory is wrong. Just accept the truth - they are generated by math::random()

Possible, but still unlikely. We know the system worked as intended previously, and if you have the console unlocked, they still get player names assigned so I'm going to assume that it still works as originally intended.

Might generate them randomly if it has no pool to draw on, but even now - over the last month when there was a general lull in playing, I saw almost no empowereds when running Master Levels. Now that a hundredish friends are playing again, the maps are full of them.

They are somehow tied together still.
I hear yall, but its totally stupid that the game devs decided to cater to the crowd that likes to switches guns 60 times per minute and make an infuriating DLC for a game that was already hard enough.

Its like the devs were only looking at speed runners and all the tricks those guys use and tried to cater to that, instead of the majority of normal people who play the game...

You can disable empowered demons...

Empowered demons are the ones that kill others in my friends list playing? That sucks I have no friends. I wasnt for sure what was special about empowered demons.
Titan 2020年10月23日 12時58分
I can say with absolutely certainty that empowered demons have absolutely nothing to do with your friends list, because I had them in every level of The Ancient Gods when none of my friends even owned the DLC.
wow my friends suck then. lol jk

They migrate between levels. The game doesn't throw Empowered demons at you until Taras Nabad. So if a Mancubus killed one of your friends in Cultist Base, you will meet the empowered Mancubus in Taras Nabad and above, including DLC levels.

I can say with 100% certainty this is not correct. I consistently get empowered demons as early as Super Gore Nest.
Just found this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Swna5GeL24g&t=3m06s

(EDIT: since timestamps don't work on Steam; Caco at 03m06s)

Cynic gets the exact same Caco I described in my original post. Seems a bit suspicious, if you ask me.

Again, I have nothing against empowered demons, I think they're cool. But I'm a bit annoyed ID seemingly couldn't implement them as they intended and then just kept consumers in the dark about it.

Maybe there was some change in the last few months because I turned them off when I started to do Extra Life runs and Ultra-Nightmare attempts.

Turn the difficulty down if it's too hard for you. Not anyone else's fault that you probably use the super shotgun for 20 minutes before finally switching.
