Not having a fun time with the DLC.
I'm not a DOOM veteran by any means, but i'm also not bad at the game. I beat the game in UV so i decided to go with that from the start of the DLC. And while i had a lot of fun with UV in the campaing, being the perfect mix of difficulty for me, with Ancient Gods i'm 2 levels in and i just feel drained. I thought it would be harder, i wanted it to be, but not like this.
It's too much. Too many arenas with too many enemies that take way too long with way too little breathing room in between them.
Seriously, 2 arenas back to back in the first level? I just took a keycard and that's enough to trigger another round? Not even in a different area? No breathing so i can look at the scenery, or a little bit of ammo for me to get back at it?
And when it starts, i need to keep track of every enemies' position at all times. Wich is very difficult when you have 20 fodder demons running around. If i don't know where 1 of those 20 are, one of them is gonna be behind me while i try to back up from something bigger. Or one of those fat dudes is gonna create a shield right in front of me, completely wreking my momentum. All while trying to defeat 4 Mancubi and 2 Barons and a Archville in an arena the size of a tin can. And when i think i'm done, Nope! Here's a Spirit, wich is a total bullet sponge, with no strategy at all, and when you finally kill the bastard, you have to stand in place for 5 seconds to be done with him, when the golden rule of DOOM is to always keep moving, and if you do move, he's gonna possess something else and all you work is gone. Want to make the Microwave Beam more useful? This isn't the way to do it.
I know this DLC is supposed to be hard, but this spike is too much for me, wich sucks because it completely ruined the hype that i had going in. Again, it's just draining. I don't want to have to lower the difficulty on a game i already now how to play, it's just wrong.
Challenge and frustration are two different things, and right now i'm just frustrated. I know that some of this combat stuff already happened in the base game, but with the amount of enemies that are being thrown at you, it happens even more often, wich just breaks the flow of it.

Maybe it's just not for me, but i was really excited to play this. It's more DOOM, who doesn't love more DOOM?

TL;DR: DLC is too much for me and i don't wanna have to go into baby mode to beat it.

Thank you for listening to my useless opinion. :cure:

So you're playing on hard (UV) and you're complaining that the game is... Hard?

I was fine with UV in the base game, UV in the DLC is way ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ harder. That's what i'm complaining about.

So just lower the difficulty and stop complaining.

Seems to be the trend.. Eternal was harder than 2016, so kindof makes sense that the DLC is harder than the base game, especially when you have pretty much all the tools of the endgame of the base game.

It's also the general trend of the original Doom games.

For me it isn't about difficulty it is about the amount of time it takes to do these DLC missions.

I know its the trend, i know it's supposed to be harder, my problem is how hard it is. It's a huge spike, and it just feels of.

I want to play the game on UV, because last time i played, it was on UV. I know i can lower the difficulty, but doing that on a game i've already beaten just seems odd. Also, this types of comments don't really help man... :/

That too. If they took you a while, imagine how it is for someone who's constantly dying lol.

Ancient Gods is as hard as master levels so if you can only play base game on UV you're gonna have a really hard time to with the DLC
That seems to be a problem for tihs dlc, its hard for the sake of being hard, also to artifically length the dlc so people can't request for a refund
Sam Oct 21, 2020 @ 3:42am
But that's the fun part of the game. Dying until you are good enough to move on to the next arena. If you don't have fun while dying: _lower the difficulty_

it's challenging, wait for the speedruners to destroy this dlc

I know what you mean. I love the maps and the concepts they came up with for some of the newer mechanics, but there is such a thing is throwing TOO much crap at someone. It wasn't about the difficulty per say. I was just getting burnt out of smashing through arena after arena with no room to breathe for a minute. The length and fights dragged out for way too long in some areas. All in all, it was a great piece of DLC that really added alot. But just like Battlemode, I still think Doom 2016 is the better game. I know many will disagree but that is just my two cents. The expansion is still a great addition to the Doom lineup regardless.

Although I don't exactly coincide with your stance, I really enjoy the fact that you gave good argumentation and didn't had to insult anyone to give your opinion (Which seems something rather difficult nowadays for some reason).
Still, I think lower difficulties are not “baby mode”, I mean, they exist for a reason.
Anyway, I hope you can find fun in the DLC.
