how do I beat the spirits in old gods 1 boss battle

It says I'm supposed to kill them but i can't becuase their hosts just keep respawning so they never go away

You need to microwave beam them. I suggest you while you're microwave beaming them, use Air Control rune to avoid other demons in mid-air. That helped me a lot.

Now there's something I am curious, I have never experimented or noticed this. Can the spirits possess frozen enemies, if they can what happens next? They are priority so I always get rid of them first.

Pretty sure they can, it will just be a frozen possessed enemy until they thaw out.

They will eventually go away when you kill everyone in the arena so there's no one left to possess. The best way though is the microwave beam. It's a good strategy to ice bomb the area so less demons will bother you while you grill the spirit. Stay on the move. Movement is restricted while beaming but you still can dodge enemies. It doesn't take too long to kill the spirit anyway.

And don't waste your plasma ammo while you fight the possessed demon, would be a shame if you didn't have enough left for the spirit. They are resistant to ballista anyway.

Not in the boss battle. They must be killed with the microwave beam there. Its the normal fights where you don't need to kill them
