The worst pacing breaker are the weapon challenges
People complain about marauders or ammo being problematic for the game's pacing, but to me the bloody challenges you have to do to fully unlock weapon mods are a chore.

It's always waaay too much and it prevents me from playing the game I want to play. It was an issue for me in Doom 2016 and it's an issue for me here. I'm in late game and I'm still doing grocery lists of how many of which demons I have to kill which way.

It's not that they're difficult, it's that they prevent me from playing my style if I want to fully unlock the potential of my weapons, which I do.

If I could change one thing about the new Doom games, it's the weapon challenges. Maybe not remove them, but don't make me do the same BS 15 times. It results in me hunting those 3 remaining zombies to kill them the specific way the challenges want me to.

I think that absolute WORST are the microwave and both single shotgun mods. The microwave challenge is freaking bullcrap, hate it. The absolute worst and not worth it. Most annoying challenge to get. It isn't even effective. You have to repeat that challenge multiple times with an awful gimmick. Lock-on is a bit annoying because it's just a waste of rockets but much easier to accomplish then some others.

The single shotguns are too specific. Why does the grenade mod have to be Arachnotron turrets? Why not any weakpoint like a mancubus gun or whatever. The auto shotgun is even worse. Why does it have to be pinkies? They are so far and few between that it makes you HAVE TO USE FULL AUTO on them. Thank you ID for understanding that these challenges are bad and putting mastery tokens in, except that you don't get one until Taras Nabad. By that point I ain't gonna use these except for the grenade launcher which is very nice.

Most of them are really quick to do anyway. And for the rest, there's Mastery Tokens.
I beat D2016 three times. I got SICK of them by the third. And no they're not quick if I have to do the same thing 15 times.

Instead of focusing on the 'dance' I have to focus on my to do list with the weapon challenges.
Can only be genuinely happy for you if they don't bother you, but to me they're an annoyance that conflicts with what the game is trying to achieve

that's debatable, but 2016 has the exact same problem with weapon challenges.

Yeah I think you might be right actually...
Can't really argue with this. But at least mastery tokens exist now, so you could completely ignore the challenges if you wanted to

Lock on burst mastery actually allows you to switch to another weapon more quickly after using it, which I've found to be pretty helpful.

But yeah, locking onto two targets at once is usually more harmful than helpful

Yes because there is a high chance that while targeting a Pain Elemental, you get a lock on a freakin Lost Soul and THEN the Pain Elemental. In this case, switch to other weapon to cancel the lock while enemies are attacking, then try to re-acquire the lock to not waste 3 rockets on a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Lost Soul. Or Zombie.
Mastery Tokens are awesome, they let you decide whether you want to earn a mastery via challenge or Mastery Token.

The only weapons I think that need to be focused on is the SSG for the flaming hook, and perhaps either one of the mini gun mods. Rocket launcher is debatable but the mastery IMO is one of the worst in the game, I just stop at the basic upgrades usually and don’t worry about hunting prowlers until I get to the slayer gate that spawns a million of them.

The masteries for the other weapons don’t change the game that much, probably the best out of all of them is the sticky bomb launcher for the combat shotgun. The rest at least for me gets upgraded “when I get to it” and the rest get the mastery tokens.

Then I didn't miss any so far.
Taras Nabad is too late, I've already done weapon mastery for 1 upgrade of most of my weapons.

But yeah, good to at least have the option
