How do I get past level 1

Ok, so I'm 40 and haven't really played video games since college. Trying it out again. I bought Doom Eternal. I have an xbox 360 controller I'm using. I had to YouTube how to get past the first door. I had to hit the E key on the keyboard which doesn't map to any buttons on the xbox 360 controller. Would be nice if the E key was on the controller. Then after I got through that door, I ran around a while and couldn't find anywhere to go. How do I get past this level?

There has to be a way to map E to the controller. I personally play with keyboard, but console players (xbox one and ps4 players) would know of the button. 'E' is also what to use for finishing off targets, so it should be whatever that button is on the controller.

If you're having issues and are stuck, there is no shame in googling it. Lookup a video of someone playing through the first level.

The "E" is also interact and melee. Those commands are on the controller. Map 01 is fairly easy, follow the green. There are only so many places you can go. If you get stuck, find me. I'll help.

I'm pretty sure the equivalent to E on a controller is pressing the right stick

Also make sure you play the game on the difficulty setting called "I'm too young to die"
Once you get familiar with the game and if you find it easy you can always go to the menu and turn up the difficulty to a level that suits you.

And for the Xbox 360 controls, you should go into the settings and look for gamepad controls which will show you a picture with the function of each button. One thing though, the game is significantly easier on keyboard and mouse and it is far more responsive.

I started to play again pc games half year ago and I am 50 I play first level every day on pc and I never have to press E to open the first door it opens automatically also I have finished the game on easiest lvl with out using all this recommended tactic from ID software that some people complain about so much, I excually think many of them are just trolls

I bought the game today and I never have anything spawn in the first room, and can't get the door to open. So weird. What a ♥♥♥♥ start to this game, terrible QA. I have controllers disabled just play keyboard/mouse. No idea how to fix this. I've deleted saved games and restarted as well.

UPDATE: I tried a turn off/turn on of the computer, and that has solved it. Never rebooted after install and apparently that was an issue. Now the spawns that start in the room show up and door turns green when I've dispatched them. All is right in hell.

I've never experienced that in a pc game, I bought the game with new pc few months ago and could not play it went with pc to store and they said it's working and I just needed a new HDMI cable and everything was working then fine and what a ride it was to finish this game phew.
