What is the Ripartorium for, exactly?

Unless I am missing something, I can visit the Ripartorium once per visit to the Fortress of Doom. I go down there, shoot a load of demons and when I've killed them all, I get a prompt to exit. That's it. I can't remember if it uses up my ammo or health/armour. Can someone explain to me what it's for? Many thanks.

Every visit steps up difficulty, you also have infinite extra lifes up to nightmare difficulty, so training maybe? It kinda not explained what it is for, it does refill all your ammo and fuel except BFG I think.

You can use it for practice or if your low on a couple of kills for a challenge, you can do it there. You also will get a full ammo and health restore after its done, meaning its one way to completely refill your Crucible and BFG ammo

Fun fact: if you die in Ripatorium on Ultra-Nightmare, the game ends.
At least decino says so.
