Judging by the way a portal opens and they disappear afterward, I'm guessing they're tokens that help Vega open portals in someway. Not sure how, though.

I've been speculating about those for days. I think the symbols on those tokens match the belt buckles of the Sentinels that fell on some ancient fateful day after the priests conspired to sabotage their mission and trap them in hell forever (That's the day Doomguy was locked in his sarcophagus and kept on argent energy life support for unknown millennia or something in a dimension where space and time gets all screwy).

The words "my soul remains guarded" keep repeating in my head and there is no explanation in the game for what he's going on about. There is, however, a union or pact between the Argenta civilization where the Deag council originates and the Maykr overlords who hold all of the power and knowledge which places the Maykr as a higher authority over the Argenta. A character we only see briefly as a hooded figure named Samur Maykr is a dear old friend to Doomguy, so I speculate that those coins were forged with Maykr origin by Samur after the betrayal and that's how Doomguy alone has the power to enact justice against those in such a high authority as to be beyond Argent law which is enforced by both might and magic. It reminds me of the famous trial of King Charles I where the shattered remnants of a House of Commons ("Rump Parliament") basically usurped power (formed the self-appointed "High Court of Justice") in order to judge the king himself for war crimes ("murder, treason, and tyranny" ridiculously enough). By some miracle, it actually stuck. That's a much cooler story than the plot of this game, but it's not anywhere near as exciting as punching demons.
I believe, as the DOOM Slayer(DS) drops them onto the corpse of a priest, I believe that those things are used as a form of "stay dead and don't come back" thing.

that "my soul remains guarded" bit is interesting. he says that but then looks shocked when u whip out ur blue coin

I think the blue coins are for eliminating demonic activity so when the slayer throws one of them onto a priest the demonic activity fades (just my theory)

he gets em for eliminating the guardians of the priests since he cna only permenetly kill a priest by first killing his guardian and then using the coin he got form killing the guardian when killing a priest. now i wonder what first priests guardian way. since dlcs will be a prequel to heel invading earth i wonder if that guardian could be the last boss of the dlc maybe.

The line "my soul remains guarded" and Nilox's reaction to the blue medallion seel pretty explicit to me: the Deags are immortal- as in, their soul cannot be touched and so cannot truly die, but can be killed if those medallions are destroyed (most likely when they're brought into contact with the Priests themselves).

My theory is that, if the Slayer killed the Priests without using the Medallions, the consumption of Earth would still keep going since the Priests' souls would still be existing, and so would still guide the Legions of Hell.

simple yet effective explanation. This is what I went with.

By the way the STTP3 music is in the game's soundtrack file, amongst other very interesting things.

Actually, it did give me vibes from the pennies over the eyes in Boondock Saints. Maybe it's to pay the ferryman.

The Hell Priests have been blessed by the Khan Maker with immortality. Those emblems were created by the Sentinels as a way to make them mortal again.

So basically, Doom Slayer kills them; then those emblems prevent them from just reviving themselves.

Whilst the other explanations for the function of the tokens make sense, so does your statement about the symbology symbolism of them. I'd argue that they are also a sort of "calling card." The Doom Slayer is not a subtle man--he wants the demons to know he is coming for them. By leaving those tokens on the bodies of the slain Hell Priests, it sends a message to the demons and the Makyr about exactly who was responsible for taking out their top leadership.

Likewise, they also could represent vengeance from his betrayed comrades during the civil war in Argenta. The Doom Slayer is the last uncorrupted Night Sentinel; all the others you see on Sentinel Prime are in the service of the Khan Makyr
