nightmare difficulty is not that fun
I completed my first playthrough on nightmare, but, comparing to lower difficulties, it is just not fun, because...

On nightmare you are bound to executing one most effective tactics, other tactic choices are a waste of time and huge risks

On nightmare mode some weapon mods are just useless and guarantee a quick death
Microwave beam - useless. it almost locks you in place, you can't afford that on nightmare
blast mod is a bit better, but ballista imo is more useful in general

Destroyer blade - almost the same. you get slower, and you die

heavy cannon is not heavy at all. you just never want to waste ammo with its primary attack - they are so weak. scopeshot is ok, missiles are a bit of ammo waste - good for small demons, useless for bigger ones
I am glad that we have minigun

rocket launcher remote detonator is crap. it either does not amplify damage, or it is broken in my game (one of many weapon glitches)

unmayker - waste of bfg ammo, why the hell do I want it?

pump shotgun is nice, but supershotgun is better - it is a source of armor refills and mobility

so, on nightmare mode you are left to use half of guns and mods

1. supershotgun
2. ballista and spearshot
3. minigun and turret mod
4. rocketlauncher with autoaim mod
occasional assault rifle scopeshots
occasional plasmagun shield overloading

I’ve gotten a LOT of use out of the Microwave Beam on Nightmare since the last update. It’s not meant to be a tool you use to full kill a demon with, it’s meant to be a quick finisher on larger demons that helps with others nearby by stunning and damaging them, or just a brief stun.

Destroyer Blade is usually bad no matter the scenario, unless you have the mastery in which it can shred incredibly quickly with its piercing.

Heavy Cannon is a quick way to get glory kills on fodder. 2-4 shots will get them into a glory kill state most of the time. I don’t use Micro Missiles often cause I prefer the scope but it does some really good damage especially early into a playthrough.

Remote Detonation rockets are nice when you have the mastery for them with stunning demons, especially in areas with lots of fodder that need to be cleaned up fast.

The Unmaykr just sucks. It’s a cool inclusion but not worth it.

Combat Shotgun’s sticky bombs are useful in just about any stage of the game, being a free source of high damage from a safe distance without using excessive amounts of ammo. SSG requires you to get up close which can be a death sentence at times.

Nightmare might seem restrictive at first, but you can still use just about any weapons and mods you want and still get good results as long as you use them wisely.

I completed the game before any patches, not sure if the game got easier with updates or I got even better at playing this game. probably both

That makes sense then. Microwave Beam was AWFUL on launch. With the recent update though, it kills demons much faster and doesn't completely slow you down on using it. It still slows you but not nearly as much as before. I'd recommend trying it out on your next playthrough and finding out the optimal way to use it, it's still a strange mod that requires a bit of getting used to but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is it both satisfying to use and helpful in combat.

Highest difficulties settings are for masochistic players, even if you know the game top down or are madskillz edgelord. You have to really, really, love a game to try this setting after some great first runs.

After messing around with more nightmare runs. Destroyer blade had become one of my favorites. Its better to use it with gravity lifts or by bunny hopping, it keeps your momentum but if you cant do that then gravity lift. It can clear alot of rooms fast since it goes through enemies like butter and using ice bombs and frags can help keep a target locked down. Remote detonation mod is my favorite mainly for getting alot of health and armor back from a huge group of enemies but for damage the lock on mod definitely beats it out. Using mods by themselves like the mircowave mod and the auto shotgun for example are pretty weak on there own but using them in combination with all your other guns give them a use. Mircowave gun is alot better to use after dealing alot of damage to a demon and using that to finish them off. For the basic attack for like the heavy cannon i usually only really use that on the fodder demons to glory kill them for health or blood punch, blood punch is also something i recommend you mess around with cuz honestly its alot of fun to use once you get it down on good times to use it. I run the rune where you get health for blood punch and its great in a pinch when youre low on health and a group of enemies are near by. But late game after you get all your upgrades you can chain blood punch after blood punch with your flames and ice bomb.

there is another reason to play on high difficulty - if the game is too short or you just want to squeeze more playtime out of price you paid for the game

but yeah, playing on high difficulty is not necessary, and sometimes easy|story mode is the way to go.
That's why I like playing either Normal or Ultra Violence difficulty in terms of TTK (Time To Kill).

My first playthrough was also on nightmare. As I was playing it I was thinking that it's not fun. It requires you to be a "pro-player" that is at 100% full focus all the time that only uses the best weapons and best tools at the most optimal time. By not doing so the game punishes you very hard. This is the reason why I will probably never even attempt to beat the game at Ultra-Nightmare. I also don't have the patience for that.

After beating the campaign and master levels multiple times I got used to the flow of Nightmare and I don't think the difficulty is the issue to the my "lack of fun" but the repetitive aspect of the game paired with other elements.
Cypher May 23, 2020 @ 6:27pm
the real bummer is all of the fighting game like punishes the enemies pull on you. In 2016 sometimes they were too slow, but at least you could read the demons' animations and react accordingly! In Eternal you react to the enemy itself and that's it. You have no time to tell the attack it chooses and therefore must always take him out as quickly as you can. It kinda breaks the experience when a prowler claws your face with insta-attacks (on nightmare)
UNBREAKABLE May 23, 2020 @ 7:16pm
Nightmare is the only way to play this game once you master the combat loop IMO, and even then it stops becoming as challenging when you find your play style and get good enough at the movement to dodge most attacks unconciously. Every weapon and ability has its place in the game, nightmare teaches you that.

Maybe I'm numb to it from doing Ultra Nightmare but Nightmare mode itself isn't as hard as people think and is the more fun version to play when you know what you are doing.

Easier yes with the changes made with hazards like goo and radiation nightmare ovverral is still the same huge penaltys for damage taken

Honestly, I can't imagine playing on any difficulty other than nightmare. Even on my first playthrough, I ended up raising the difficulty from ultra violence to nightmare near the end of the game because uv just felt too easy. I guess it depends on the person though.

But I wouldn't say that any of the mods are useless.

The microwave beam is meant to finish off heavy or super heavy demons that are at low health, or to create an explosion by killing a fodder demon. It's not meant to be used for more than a few seconds at a time.

The destroyer blade can be charged while you're moving in mid-air, so you aren't completely immobile while using it. This mod probably takes more skill to use than any other mod, but it can be useful if you know how to use it.

I actually use the micro missiles a lot. They're a great finisher against standard heavy demons like the revenant and the hell knight. You can hit them with a ballista shot to stun them, and then finish them quickly with the micro missiles while they're stunned. Dumping all of your micro missile ammo onto a single demon that's at full health isn't really the smartest way to use it.

Remote detonate isn't really a DPS mod. It's more meant for crowd control, or stunning a demon. I prefer lock on burst since my playstyle is aggressive, but I've seen a lot of people use remote detonate effectively.

Can't disagree about the unmakyr, but I think it was mainly added as a throwback to DOOM 64 fans.

The combat shotgun and the super shotgun both have different purposes. The sticky bombs (which are usually the preferred mod) are great for fodder control, and dealing with weak points, if you choose to do that. The super shotgun is a good way to move around the map quickly, get high ground in a fight, refill your armor, and deal a lot of damage to heavy and super heavy demons at point blank range.

Nothing is useless, it just depends on your playstyle, and what you choose to use.

It's fun watching pro Doomslayers take minimum damage and run around iike Spider-Man on Nightmare

Yep pritty much i never use the Combat shotgun or micro missiles or destroyer blade or microwave beam... then i see other players use chrono strike with the meat hook and kill pinkies in one shot. . but i use a double jump and frag grenade to stagger then dash behind then SSG
Everyone is different its amazing what works..

Some weapon mods are useless in general.
