DOOM Eternal is hot garbage
I was SUPER HYPED for this game, and upgraded my computer specifically for it.

They took something that was truly great in Doom 2016 (one of my favorite games ever, next to UT99), and ruined what would otherwise be an alright game with Sonic the Hedgehog platforming puzzles. I thought platforming puzzles died in 1998 with Half-Life? I'm about 4 hours into Doom Eternal, and the stupid grabbing and jumping from wall to wall and monkey bars business is absolutely infuriating.

Also, what the f*ck is going on with the story? I'm guessing I'm 1/3 of the way though and there are cut scenes (that really take you out of the moment) for doors opening, but no explanation for how Vega gets reloaded somehow? Or what the hell happened to earth? Or why you should pay any mind to who any of the priest characters are? As it is, I'm just some Joe-Blo who shouldn't be on earth, with a shotgun killing monsters because.. I dunno, I have a shotgun in my hands? In Doom 2016 you were trying to escape Mars and stop the spread of the horde. In Eternal, the Hoarde's moved in and now you're just killing them for..sport? I honestly have no clue, and the codex doesn't reveal much, just 'lore from eons ago'

Like how did doomguy get a space bat-cave???

If they had just done a continuation of the plot and gameplay mechanics that were in Doom 2016, but on earth, with characters who would explain the story along with the game, I'd forgive the distracting ammo/health/armor management system. Big fights and all I can think about is "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Spider things! Fire, glory kill, chainsaw. Fire, glory kill, chainsaw, CRAP ANOTHER SPIDER THING UGHHH"

But its the grossly exhausting platforming that does it in. That and unneeded inventory management, I feel like I'm grinding instead of experiencing a game with incredible level design.

1. I don't know where you get this news from, platforming puzzles didn't die in 1998 because of Half-Life.
2. VEGA gets a backup by the Doom Slayer at the end of VEGA Core in DOOM 2016.
3. You can skip the cutscenes and story. Sure I personally sat through and enjoyed it at my first couple playthroughs, but after that I just skip it.
4. It's said that the stuff that happened between DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal is going to be covered by the upcoming DLCs.
5. Try adapting to the game mechanics, if you feel like you can't then it is fine to lower the game difficulty, there's nothing wrong with it and anyone who shame you for doing so is an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Speaking of monkey bars, the platforming 'puzzles' in this game are so easy, they could be done BY A MONKEY. The extra movement during fights and the level traversing are SO much better than 2016 imo since you have alot more freedom of movement than just walking like last game.

As for the story, it explains as much as it needs to. We will probably learn how he got the space base in the dlc, but you can make obvious connections that -> Doomguy is a night sentinel and the base belonged to the night sentinels -> he knew how to get a hold of it. As for how Earth get's invaded it's explained how and why later in the story... Vega survived if you paid any attention to 2016 so I won't comment on that.

As for how the new gameplay loop is, they made all weapons a necessity here. In 2016, it was so easy that a baby could beat the game with just the Super Shotgun on nightmare. Here, they make enemies way more aggressive and using the chainsaw is a necessity unlike how it was in 2016, where you barely needed it at ALL.

Overall, the game feels head and shoulders above not just the 2016 original, but most other shooters today.

Yes, Eternal is huge huge letdown. Doom 2016 is my favorite three FPS. (Another two are: Golden Eyes, Call of Duty 2.)

My complaints:

1. Story? Really? Who plays Doom want story? If you want to tell a story, at least make it good! What the hell Eternal story is about?

2. Platform? Really? If I want platform, I will play Mario!

3. Ammo limitation? Really? If I want to worry ammo, I will play Resident Evil!

4. Terrible multiplayer. I love Doom 2016 multiplayer, I even got all achievements, what the hell is Eternal multiplayer?

5. Bugs. Weapons Expert achievements is buggy.

6. Crash. It happens many times on my two computers and many people.

2. Platform? Really? If I want platform, I will go play Mario!

since Quake Id games have lot of it.

3. Ammo limitation? Really? If I want to worry my ammo, I will play Resident Evil!

upgrade your ammo, it is the same in 2016.

4. Terrible multiplayer. I love Doom 2016 multiplayer, I even got all achievements, what the hell is Eternal multiplayer?

2016 multiplayer not that successful and that's why they don't want to do it again.

5. Bugs. Weapons Expert achievements is buggy.

need double kill with BFG if you can't do it find a boosting group.

6. Crash. It happens many times.

Doom 1 and 2 had more platforming than this.

Kinda feel the same way,I'v replayed levels and while I like the plaforming in some levels like Marscore other are completly dumb, like there a section in Exultia where I can clearly make a jump clearing a whole section of platforming but an invisable wall just kills me if I jump off that high.

Main thing I notice with the story is that they try to expand on the world but try to give DoomSlayer more humanity at the same time by giving him a face with more screen time. They did just fine in the first few cutscences in Doom 2016 with him not giving a ♥♥♥♥ about sams plans and him getting pissed over dead bodies of humans in the elevator, he probably showed more personality in the last game not showing a damn thing in the other scenes like him hesitating to kill Vega the first time, now he just walks around and flashes his gun, doesnt give react to Vega again.
