Anyone disappointed with the Unmaykr & the Sword?
I've never played Doom64 before, but when I saw videos of the then called Unmaker, the thing melted a Cyberdemon faster than the BFG when it was fully upgraded, which got me really excited.

Now?

First it shares its ammo with the BFG, which already gives you only two shots for the gun (seriously, why must you hurt me that way - I love pain, but this just breaks my heart - no more 3 shots like before but I'll live with it) and the damage it does doesn't really make it more worthwhile than using a room clearing weapon.

And it just burns through ammo so damn quick it's a bit underwhelming comparing to the BFG. I was honestly kinda bit disappointed how the only way this weapon is viable is through the infinite ammo cheatcode and not in vanilla gameplay - that and that there is simply no benefit in using the weapon over the BFG at all.

And then comes the sword.

I was also very, VERY excited when I grabbed it and slashed a few demons with it - it was fun and hilarious how their body parts just wooshed away when you slice them. But when I used it more and more I also felt that the Sword was only a simple get-out-of-jail card that doesn't do much honestly. I mean, it's also kinda disappointing how you have to pick up the energy for the sword like some sort of Arcade - which also means that the sword is not worth using in the earlier levels because they HAVE NO PICKUPS FOR IT.

They could've went with the same thing they did with the chainsaw, where it slowly regenerates energy for one swing or, even better, get energy from killing demons with your usual weapons and then use the sword as a means to instakill any demon and get your health back - kinda like how the Soul Cube worked in Doom 3.

I still love the game, don't get me wrong, it's just that the Unmaykr and the sword are kinda like the two super hot girls you got a chance to date and make out with, only to later realise how shallow their personality is.

Unmaker: "Well, I can stun a maurader into death with a quickswap BFG shot. Clearly the Unmaker will also... Oh he pulls out his shield in the middle of being shot by the unmaker"

Sword: "So they gave me infinite sword for the final boss. You know what I need more than that? an imp or zombie to chainsaw."

The sword at least, can come in handy and work mostly as advertised. But yeaaaaaah, really put a dark twist on "Just chainsaw more imps LOL" when your sword is turned into a glorified "Blood punch some zombies for quick health". Because if you use the infinite blood punch pickups, you can't get he ammo you need to... you know. kill the boss.

Unmaker is essentially sabotaging yourself. No matter how often people say "Well uh... its' more ammo efficient!" Like, I could see it if we had a max capacity of three BFG shots but welp. two shots tops.

I don't know, I got a fair bit of use out of the Unmaykr in the last few missions. Being able to just lay into a group of demons and watch them all explode is good fun, doubly so if you flame belch them before hand and get to watch armor shards just spill out of the screen.

Plus, the sword literally deletes any demon you swing it at. What's wrong with it?

I mean, if you shot the BFG it would kill every pain elemental in your zip code. And still live up to "And if you set them on fire first-" add on claims.

Ask yourself "How many things died while also damaging this big enemy" the next time you bother with the unmaker.

Even going back and playing with infinite ammo cheats for fun, Unmaker is unsatisfying.

I just dislike how the sword doesn't have any sense of viscerality to it. I guess it's so powerful it's cutting through like butter, but still.

Except when a demon jumps in front of the BFG ball and swallows the projectile before it can damage anything.

Also, stop being so stuck up and acting as though your way of playing is objectively the best. What do you care if I'm killing things with the Unmaykr in a single player mission that in no way affects you?

Ah, one of the grand paradoxes of gaming.

You can trash talk all you like if it's to say "LOL GIT GUD". But try to HELP someone by warning them they are just using a weak weapon?

Oh, oh no. NOW gamers have gone TOO FAR!

I kid of course. Now, if you like the Unmaker, you'll LOVE the Microwave mod! Totally top tier, in no way will you be handicapping yourself to use it. Only someone stuck up would think ANY weapon in this game underperforms.

What the ♥♥♥♥ are you even talking about? I didn't realize I suddenly represent ALL gamers...

The gun sucks never used it and i don't like the sword gameplay either.

I would rather have a sword way less powerfull with infinite charge that can deflect projectile like a jedi knight and deal aoe that stagger demons and deal some damage

Seriously having ammo on a sword is frustrating, and it's even more frustratring because she just look amazing

the crucible is awesome. but if you can't get ammo from chainsawing, what's the point of any of the super weapons
Connatic Mar 29, 2020 @ 7:07pm
The Crucible is amazing. It essentially became what the Chainsaw was in 2016.

The Unmaykr is disappointing. I haven't figured out what it's niche is. Most weapons in Eternal, at least have a demon it's better than average against, I'm wondering if I'm missing something with the Unmaykr.

The most broad "Well... At least it-" usage for the Unmaker is to spray it some at the final boss.

Funny enough, not because of direct vs one target potential reasons. But because it won't kill nearby imps you will want to chainsaw for ammo like the BFG would. Essentially, harnessing the reasons it is a disapointment to your advantage.

But it's more comforting/a better sales pitch to say "Because it's STRONG against the final boss!"

The only time I ever used the Unmaykr was against the Icon of Sin

I got some good use out of the Unmaykr in situations where 4 or 5 heavies were rushing me down and I didn't have time to line up a BFG shot. Just bust out the Unmaykr, start spraying, and watch everything liquefy.

It's not as powerful as the one in Doom 64. If it was, it'd pretty much break the game.
