Mission select: quitting mid mission

When replaying a mission is it possible to exit the game and come back later to continue where you left off?
It seems that any time I exit during mission select all progress is lost and I need to restart it from the beginning

How do you exit a mission? Is it possible to do so for Master Levels?

With "exit to desktop" or just Alt+F4

I do not think so. But i believe you keep any progress towards upgrades and challenges.

If you reach certain checkpoints your game will be saved and you can continue. Though you have to press ESC and then leave. Alt+F4 could cause some issues.

I think any leaving option (exit mission, exit to main menu, exit to desktop) causes all checkpoints in the mission to be lost, so the next time I need to start the mission from the beginning.

Exit Mission does remove the checkpoints, though exit to main menu and exit to desktop works, it continues with the checkpoint (I can confirm that). Just press continue and dont select a level.

Doing exactly that brings me back to the Fortress of Doom. All progress lost

I could be mistaken but continue lets you continue where you are in the campaign.

mission select always functions separately, and you cannot maintain these checkpoints upon exiting .

I see. So mission select probably works differently from the campaign and you need to clear those in one go.

What are you guys talking about? When I quit mission, it just sets me back to the last checkpoint when I come back to it. The only exception is UltraNightmare, where I don't recommend quitting mid-mission, because it wipes your save for no reason.

Only during mission select, after you have beaten the game.
