One important factor is this highlighting the hypocrisy of many gamers.

What's "Bad" about 2016? Oh, people just spam the SSG and Gauss!

Meanwhile, what do most of those same people start talking tough about for one of the common complaints about Doom? "Quickswap SSG and Not Gauss more, idiot!"

So, Doom Eternal should be even WORSE than 2016 by dumbing it down further so the """problem""" of SSG+Gauss spam is now a meme response pro-tip for Eternal right?

Except, that's never the point of that claim. The point is to present a false narrative of "Doom 2016 was actually a bad game for babies!" because they can't handle both of these games both being good, and both games having flaws.

It's why you see people who can handle the marauder and ammo count just fine, still get told "Infinite ammo cheats are over there! doom 2016 was overpowered!" when they point out how silly it is we can fire the rocket launcher more times per chainsawing than the super shotgun.

As if four whole extra shotgun shells will suddenly "ruin" this game's new loop. Because if you don't claim it's perfect already, clearly you just want identical to 2016 right?

Now, back to quickswapping my SSG and Ballista to kill Marauders. Which everyone knows, is a cool and great and fresh gameplay mindset only people who hate Doom can't manage to do.

Not like that mean old casual 2016 where swapping between my SSG and Gauss is something that should never have happened in any Doom Game, and only people who hate Doom would ever do it.

These are both entirely different. Honest. Why would anyone find this argument suspect? If they do they just can't appreciate perfection.

Seriously though. This is a a great game, but the worst part of it like many are those so desperate for the gutter scrapings of gamer cred they turn loving this wonderful game into a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ JOKE.

If by, "Back in my day" you mean the 90's, I've a theory

When DOOM first came out back in the 90's, it was pretty popular and present among players. It frequently showed up in the news, and according to some sources, was installed on more computers than regular operating systems were.

And back then, when it first exploded, I'd say the community was probably obnoxious to a simillar level to what it's like now

But a lot of people moved on from DOOM. And the more dedicated, and likely younger, players were the ones who remained. And portions of these dedicated DOOM players may have been quite obnoxious too, but you (Not saying you were obnoxious, I dunno') along with these DOOM players kept growing into something better. And now you're experiencing a bit of a shock as you see newbies swarm in with a mixture of positive and negative impacts.

You've been used to your experienced and grown DOOM community. And now that it's exploding again with Eternal and 2016, it'll attract new audiences and players to come and check it out, which brings in a lot of good and bad people. Unfortanantly, in any community, the bad people tend to be the loudest.

Please refer to Doom 2's cover artwork and the S&M punk rocker dude firing at the cyber demon before you refer to anything as "cringy. "

(I also love that cover and think Doom inherently has cringe as a part of its character. The notion that the game should be super serious is not part of its pedigree.)

Maybe the OP was still talking to fellow DOOM fans over internet forums, or newsgroups...come on now.

Doom supported LAN/serial connection (including over modem) only, no online MP. Dwango & others brought us that joy. :)

Back then there was less ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ because there was only isolated places to ♥♥♥♥♥ at, and it didn't spread.

EDIT: Doom was also a popular subjet on BBS's at the time.

Got a nice chuckle!
