Chaingun OP?
Ever since I got it + the Turret mod I have honestly had little incentive to use any other weapon (apart from the BFG and Crucible occasionally - when they became available).
Turret mode annihilates pretty much anything in no time, while still burning through ammo at a slow enough pace to chainsaw the next fodder demon.

If possible, perhaps ammo consumption should be upped, or movement speed further reduced?

Turret mode slows you down and quick swapping rocket launcher, ballista and super shotgun gives you much higher dps. But it is indeed one of the best weapons in the game.

No. The exact opposite I would say. The thing is incredibly ammo inefficient and you're still open to AoE and melee attacks. This weapon does nothing that the SSG Balist and Rocketlauncher don't do better.

On very low difficulties it might seem too strong, but when you try UV or Nightmare you'll regret using it frequently.

Agreed. My first playthrough was on UV and I didn't really use it all that much outside of taking down Hell Knight/Barons (and their variants) since it specializes in faltering (briefly stunning) them.

I used it pretty heavily during my UV playthrough and had good results.

If you're just outside mid range and all of your opponents are in front of you it's a good option for sustained damage.

If you need to burst something down SSG+Ballista are better.

I saw some people use it to take down far away pain elementals, mancubi, etc. On higher difficulties it’s basically just a good tool to save other ammo + a nice precise long range single target weapon.
I personally almost never used the Chaingun playing on Nightmare. The only time I used it in my last playthrough was to kill frozen demons when I was low on shotgun/cell ammo (almost never cause I chainsaw at every opportunity), and to absolutely shred the Khan Maykr.

i personally find the chaingun a good way to set up fodder demons for glorykills too. And I suppose the shield is a useful enough emergency measure? It’s not hit scan I think but its bullets have a much higher velocity than for example the heavy cannon and combined with its fast rate of fire it’s probably the best weapon for setting up glorykills.

It's the worst weapon in the game imo

It'd be a lot more useful if the rifle didn't exist, so it would be the only automatic bullet weapon. At least it doesn't have the awful windup from 2016.

Dunno, I feel like it's better than the heavy cannon at least.

Any range where I was going to use the HC I'd find the chaingun more effective most of the time.

That's a bit too harsh. It have decent damage , decent range , fast fire rate , and both of it's mods are fantastic.

I liked the Shield mod for the Chaingun more than the Turret Mode.

The Turret has insane damage, and it's not THAT bad on bullet use overall. But the lowered mobility makes you an easy target for every projectile. It's best used to just tear up the Super Heavy demons but aside from that the regular Chaingun does the job just as well.

And because of that, the shield just offers more general usability in my opinion. Also, the shield mod when mastered, shooting out the shield also does a good chunk of damage.

Should have mentioned that I was playing on UV. It's way too strong there as well, but I suppose the mobility hit becomes a lot more tangible on NM.
Grampire Apr 4, 2020 @ 2:00pm
The mobility hurts in on NM for sure, but there are situations where it's still the best choice.

Plus, if you can engage on NM without getting close it removes a lot of risk, and the chaingun is great in those cases.

I feel like it serves a similar purpose to the chainguns in the original Doom games TBH.

It does, it falters almost every enemy.
