On very low difficulties it might seem too strong, but when you try UV or Nightmare you'll regret using it frequently.
If you're just outside mid range and all of your opponents are in front of you it's a good option for sustained damage.
If you need to burst something down SSG+Ballista are better.
Any range where I was going to use the HC I'd find the chaingun more effective most of the time.
That's a bit too harsh. It have decent damage , decent range , fast fire rate , and both of it's mods are fantastic.
The Turret has insane damage, and it's not THAT bad on bullet use overall. But the lowered mobility makes you an easy target for every projectile. It's best used to just tear up the Super Heavy demons but aside from that the regular Chaingun does the job just as well.
And because of that, the shield just offers more general usability in my opinion. Also, the shield mod when mastered, shooting out the shield also does a good chunk of damage.
Plus, if you can engage on NM without getting close it removes a lot of risk, and the chaingun is great in those cases.
I feel like it serves a similar purpose to the chainguns in the original Doom games TBH.
