What was the Divinity machine meant to do?

So I get that the slayer is the original doomguy empowered by the divinity machine to become something more than mortal, but what confuses me is what the machine was meant to do in the first place? Like the codex's say the argentans were told it was to find a great betrayer amongst them someday and they were confused that it could even be used to empower someone instead.

So is this just of case of samur hacking the machine and changing its function or was it always meant to empower someone and there's some hidden implied purpose that I'm not getting?

If you read the lore on the marauders, it was also used to revive night sentinels that were loyal to the Maykrs as demons to be sent back into combat after they were killed.

Basically, the divinity machine is a deus ex machina that just does whatever the writers want it to. Honestly, if you look too deep into the story of a Doom game, you're probably going to be disappointed.
