How were all the giant earth mechs defeated?

For real, that first level you see a bunch of HUGE mechs just laying/standing there. With that kinda firepower they should have vaporized most anything.

I don't buy those barge-carrying titan demons defeated them—they seem really slow and a giant ass cannon would shoot right though'em.

As I understand it, in DOOM 16', when the invasion first began on Mars, it was done so through "Lazarus waves". These waves pulsed through the facilities and corrupted most of the staff. Perhaps the pilots of these mechs suffered the same fate.

Heheh. You'll see. And let's not forget the Doom Slayer got some roids in him. Regular humans don't stand a chance, so it's not that unbelievable that giant demons > giant human mechs.

Huh, those mechs have cannons as big as houses...hard to imagine something being able to even get close.

But I guess if some mumbo-jumbo magic was in play then anything can happen.

Yeah I did see those demons, but for one they seem slow and two getting hit with a shell the size of a car would blow right through them.

I believe one of the log recordings mentions how "We blew apart thousands of them, millions more came in their wake". There's also mentions of an ARC counter-attack on the super-gore nest where thousands upon thousands of Gargoyles were able to cripple or sink the battleship fleet providing artillery support.

And I mean, the Night Sentinels also had their own giant 'mechs - didn't seem to help them, either. Two of them feature in one map, with needing to insert batteries into them to use their weapons to clear the path. One buried into the ground with a massive arm cannon laser sticking out, used to blast open a wall, and another where it's Crucible-style spear just eviscerates an equally giant demon's torso to let you continue.

Point is, you can blow apart as many demons as you want, but they have zero sense of self-preservation in any matter except the Doom Slayer (and even then only sort of). Sooner or later the mech will run out of ammo, or it's weapons will overheat, and the swarm will be able to close in because they simply don't care how many they lose to get there.

I've never fought one, no. But then I'm an atheist so I don't think they actually exist.

Besides you forgot that the demon hordes are massively outnumbering the humans , some of them spewing raw argent energy , there are multiple titans , and who knows how big are those tentacle demons are.

From the codex, for the record. Seems the priests are somehow able to strengthen the barge-bearing demons to invulnerability.

Bigger =/= Better. Possible issues:

• Some small demon managed to get close enough to the mech to get on it. Once physically on the mech it could start ripping at metal and wiring and the mech would have little to combat that
  
• Sheer numbers. Demons significantly outnumbered the mechs. A mech could kill a hundred demons without causing a dent in the horde, but one lucky shot from a demon takes out a mech which causes a huge setback
  
• Environment. Earth was cracking apart, rivers of lava. It is unclear how well adapted the mechs may have been to fighting in such a situation
  
• Sabotage. It seems like some people were in support of the demons
