To those understandably frustrated with the ammo... hold out. It's worth it.
I personally was a bit frustrated (though not as frustrated as most) with the constant ammo management when I first started playing. I was even MORE frustrated when I unlocked all the ammo upgrades and was still running out constantly. But I've made a lot of progress since the early levels. Stick with it guys and gals, it's worth it.

I'm 10 hours in now and combat zones feel identical to 2016. The "management" aspect of the game has become second nature. I don't even think about it anymore. All I'm focused on is the enemy in front of me and how to exploit the arena to my advantage. Sure I've still got to whip out the chainsaw and use the flame thrower but it's automatic at this point. I'm not fantastic at shooters by any stretch of the imagination but while I was struggling mightily in the beginning vs Aracnatrons, Revenants and Mancubi I'm now breezing through FAR more complex arenas filled with much tougher enemies. ID has done a fantastic job of teaching you how to play their game.

Hang in their guys! They did their homework, let's give them a chance.

The ammo maxes out at 24 shells for the shotgun, and 13 rockets. That is pathetic.

The fact the chainsaw replenishes is a big hint you should use it, Ive NEVER had issues with ammo

if issues are making you stop playing just use wemod to solve the friction

when you loathe some feature in an otherwise great game, just solve it with a mod and have your fun and value back

But once you reach mid game you'll be automatically chainsawing small enemies without even thinking about it. You'll never run out of ammo because refilling just becomes a reflex. That's the point im making.

I personally just use multiple weapons, By the time im half ammo my chainsaw is refilled and ready to whack another enemy... But thats just me apparently

This as well. There are plenty of effective weapons in the game.

the normal difficulty is just too hard, they should make less difficult

I've said this many times before... But I have no problem reposting this.

THE SHOTGUN IS A UNLIMITED AMMO SOURCE THAT MAKES GLORY KILLS NOT MANDATORY! AFTER JUST A LITTLE BIT OF MAP EXPLORATION!

I WILL BREAK IT DOWN WITH SOME VERY COMPLICATED MATH! This is some big boi math. Prepare your selves.

Shotgun Autofire Mastered = Monsters drop shotgun shells when you kill them with it. *meaning you can use the auto fire to finish off an enemy for shotgun ammo*
Shotgun shells = Super Shotgun
Super Shotgun = Armor Drops and Mobility*with the meathook mastery*
Armor drops and Mobility = Not needing to grab health to begin with *because the demons simply can not hit you*
Not needing to grab health to begin with = Not needing to bother with glory kills and avoid having to go into melee range of enemies for health. *which further prevents demons from hitting you to start with*
Not needing to bother with glory kills and avoiding having to go into melee range means you can maneuver better and avoid some risk vs reward. *and massively cut down on any risk involved in engagements*

*Other hint* Exploding Barrels are ammo pinatas that respawn. USE THEM! You should never need to use the chainsaw to replenish your shotgun ammo. Shotgun ammo is extremely abundant and is the core ammo that can lead to everything else.

Only use the chainsaw when you need the other ammo types replenished.

Rockets only advantage comes from their ability to deal hard hits and stun. Once you have the monster stunned, switch to the ballista and finish them off with that instead. It's damage and splash is close to the rocket launcher but far more abundant. Machinegun/Chaingun bullets are also quite abundant and really don't need to be used for very much other than breaking weak points. The micromissiles are just a blatant waste of ammo unless there is a game challenge asking you to use them.

Your Super Shotgun and Combat Shotgun "should" be your bread and butter. Everything else is just sandwich toppings that are tools for various situations.

A couple of issues. First, you need to master the shotgun autofire mod, which won't happen for a good portion of the game--Pinkies aren't so common that you'll encounter 15 of them for a bit. And I've noticed some Pinky kills not counting toward the mastery, although that may be because something else (e.g. an exploding barrel or grenade) dealt the coup de grace.

Second, the ammo capacity is too low to really get good use out of the shotgun autofire mod. Consistent with all rotary barrel weapons in video games, this one has a noticeable spinup before it reaches max fire rate. By the time you've really got the thing going, it's low on ammo which prevents it from being as much fun as a Gatling gun shotgun should be.

Third, the respawning, ammo-granting exploding barrels are Praetor Suit upgrades that must be purchased, and not all levels have an abundance of exploding barrels. However, the barrels do seem to prioritize ammo for your equipped weapon, which is nice.

If they just raised the max shotgun ammo capacity to, say, 40 shells, we'd really be cooking with gas as you'd be able to let the shotgun automatic fire mod tear into enemies.

The current system allowed the developers to be lazier with level design--they didn't need to think about how they would place ammo, armour, and health pickups in each stage since they could simply have fodder demons respawn as ammo/health/armour dispensers for the player. Since virtually every fight is an arena setpiece, they didn't have to be too thoughtful or creative about monster placement either.

Don't get me wrong--this is a fun game, and a rather well polished one (other than some bugs). But it isn't in the same vein as any of the preceding Doom titles. Whether that's a good or bad thing is subjective, and time will tell whether this game will be a trendsetter like the 1993 title that started it all before anyone told us about id. I have my doubts about the longevity or lasting influence of Doom Eternal, but if you'd asked me back in '94 whether people would still be playing Doom II over a quarter of a century later, I probably would have been equally sceptical.

whats the point of having ammo when the demons wont die , keep shooting barrels that dont explode , demons respawn quicker than i can kill them

You can take the shotgun and re-do the maps for further pinky kills, also the master levels count towards your weapon progression and in the master levels. Theyre chalk full of them. By the 2nd half of the 2nd map you should be able to have your shotgun mastered without much trouble.

The other things take just a little bit longer, but by the 3rd map if you did your exploration properly you should have the thing set.

The gatling shotgun is a tool just as much as the rest.

Hurt the monsters, and instead of killing them from start to finish with your shotgun use it to get the finishing blows so that you can use your super shotgun a bunch more.

By the time you actaully have your suit mastered though you have a lot of ammo in reserve to do what ever you need to.
