This is way harder than Doom (2016)
I completed Doom (2016) on normal difficulty without any problem - and that was 4 years ago, when I only just built a gaming PC and haven't used a mouse and keyboard for gaming for 8 years.

Now, after 4 years and much more experience with a mouse and keyboard, I'm having quite a hard time with Doom: Eternal.

I even warmed up for it by playing and completing 4 FPS games this month:
- Rainbow Six: Siege
- Black Mesa
- Halo: CE - Anniversary
- CoD: MW (on Realistic difficulty)

Yet, I'm an inch away from dying in DE most of the time on normal difficulty, and if I wouldn't be a completionist and I wouldn't collect that much Extra Lifes, I'm pretty sure I would have gotten stuck by a long time ago.

I tried easy difficulty too when I replayed a level for getting the missing collectibles and even that felt significantly, clearly harder than normal difficulty in Doom (2016).

I feel like the problem is that it doesn't matter how fast I move, jump, dash, dodge, I'll still get hit a lot by enemy projectiles. It wasn't the case in the previous game.

I know that it's a thinking person's action game and I understand why the ammo is so limited, why I have to manage my resources carefully, why I have to weapon and mod swap constantly to be able to adapt to the given situations.

But still... enemy damage output is just too much. I wouldn't have problem with any of the other aspects of the game - namely how much HP/Armor Shards/Ammo a demon drops upon getting executed and/or how many I can get from environemtal loots, etc.

But the damage output of enemies even on normal difficulty is simply too much for my taste. Because of this, I pretty much have to glory kill / execute every single enemy.

Those "warm up" doesn't really help you at all if you ask me....

Those game have different game mechanism compare to doom eternal. I recommend you to be patient and learn how to dodge the enemy attack. At least, that's how I overcome games like DUSK and Final doom.

You could also weaken the enemy by destroying their weapon such as their hand cannon. That will lower their attack damage.

I know, that's a core, basic game mechanic, I do that all the time. But it feels like I even get punished for that... While I'm removing the weakpoints of a Mancubus or a Revenant, I get shot in the ass ten times.

A lot of times it feels like it doesn't even worth removing weakpoints if you can't do it extremely fast. A lot of times it feels like it's just simply more effective and better to spam dash, run in circles, and slowly chip away the health of the enemies.

Basically, I feel like the game instead of incentivizing the smart, methodical play, it disincentivizing me from doing that.

that's by design. the demon ai is incredibly aggressive and you have to be quick, they actively try to get angles on you. do NOT stop moving. be very aware of what enemies have spawned and where they are. use monkeybars to get a window to take out weak points.

To be honest Doom 2016 was only harder up until you got the plasma rifle, people remember that game to be much harder that it really was, most of its difficulty was due to fighting imps with a shotty.

My friends and I have been messaging each other as we play, and we all unanimously agree this one is waaay harder. In 2016 you could be carefree with resources, not so in Eternal. They want to shoehorn you into weak points and the rock-paper-scissors style of fighting, which isn't a bad thing, but just not AS fun in my opinion.

Yes, this game is much harder then the last DOOM. I played on second hardest difficulty in last game and this one and man, sometimes you get so many enemies on you at once I wouldnt be able to survived without those extra lives. Dont get me started ont he muraders, cheap ass mini bosses.

Playing on Nightmare and its still easy when you understand the AI.
It is relatively ''harder'' compared to 2016 but it is due to map design and enemy numbers in hub.
I like a good challenge so maybe its just me :<

Don't stop moving, you have 2 dashes and double jump, search the levels and USE your flamethrower armor is a much more important resource on eternal.
neptune Mar 20, 2020 @ 10:45pm
I've found it easier actually. I'm on Hurt me plenty right now but i think i need to bump it up..

Reminding myself to use the flamethrower is the hardest thing for me, lol. Also, I wish enemies dropped more stuff on glory kills, but i guess the chainsaw makes up for it. I also think it is way way harder and keeps getting harder the further I get in, but I'm adjusting. There's just a lot more stuff I feel like I need to keep track of to have a chance in firefights

You have 3 dashes and you STILL have a hard time?
zboy2106 Mar 20, 2020 @ 10:51pm
I need to replay the game on Ultra-Violent cause Nightmare give me so many dead. I rage quit during middle of Exultia mission.

Imo, the damage feels the same as Doom 16 on UV, cant confirm it though. What happens its like the game is WAY more frantic, just on 3rd level and there was an encounter that they sent a lot of enemies at you. That didnt happened on 16 until later levels. In other words, you really have to keep moving all the time, focus on weak spots and using the cannon skills. And dont forget the chainsaw for that sweet ammo.
