Bad Ammo Management
I never thought about this as an issue during Doom 2016, was there too much ammo before or something?

There's way more ammo management and small max ammo than what's enjoyable, constantly keeping an eye out for ammo pickups (to at least remember where they are) and save my Gas for when there aren't any to pick up, accidentally picking up an ammo when I only shoot once, wasting overall ammo, usually because there's two pickups next to each other and I'm still in that area. You can tell they try to avoid this by stashing some of them in pointless corners.

Edit: I'd rather have "Reloading" than this...

Or, this is at least how I'm experiencing early game (I hope we get a higher max ammo later), making each room it's own mini-game of managing your ammo-saving efficiency; requiring Glory Kills as your main kill order by shooting them just enough to start it. EDIT: ...turning this game into a bunch of micro-cutscene than a "shooter." I'm not saying, "your ammo shouldn't be something to look out for," but this isn't enjoyable. I didn't think they mentioned "Rip and Tear" before release was propaganda for a core mechanic of NEEDING to Glory Kill just about everything.

Rip and tear; more like, get in Melee range... then shoot them just enough to Glory Kill them before it goes away and run past many demons to avoid a lot of them to save ammo or risk needing to grab a stash just to start killing in the next room. Trying to not run out of Gas and Gas is often not in "pointless corners" like most ammo stashes without a Gas Ammo indicator to tell you if you'd be wasting any once you pick it up. Can't even use Chainsaw on the ones you actually need your ammo for which is counter intuitive in its own way, especially if you're out of ammo and there isn't anyone to use your Chainsaw on but still gotta fight a slightly bigger demon.

EDIT: I don't mind partial scarcity of ammo but that max ammo tho... Doom had something good, no reload, but they replaced that in Eternal with an even more annoying mechanic, constantly searching for ammo.

P.S. This game has just turned into a constant micro-cutscene mess
So, basically I have to run through the game on Easy mode and find the "cheat codes" then enable Unlimited Ammo and play it on hardest difficulty to then finally start enjoying this game

While I also frequently run out of ammo I usually have gas to replenish it. This seems more like a design decision - for example even after ammo upgrades, while the rifle and plasma get substantial upgrades, shotgun and rocket launcher especially barelly do (+1 rocket per upgrade). I guess this, along other mechanics is to force players to switch weapons constantly and it's working for me. Nightmare here, what's your difficulty?

The ammo survival aspect goes against the original Doom games. Which had plenty of ammo and big ammo capacity.

Keep track of the zombies that walk around not doing anything. They're walking ammo crates. I never really had to use the chainsaw in 2016, I have to use it all the time now and it's awesome.

You never had to use it in Doom 1 or 2 either. It was a nice optional weapon.

Games evolve. I don't think anybody expected this to be a copy of original DOOM mechanically and I'm glad it's not

the chainsaw regenerates a single gas charge fairly quickly now, the idea is to mow down higher priority targets and use the chainsaw to mow down smaller stuff. once i stopped wasting ammo on zombies and imps everything improved greatly.

that doesnt mean that i enjoy it as a gameplay mechanic, however. the chainsaw was something i used against high priority and high threat targets in doom 2016 which generally lead to really cool death cutscenes. now we burn through ammo and just cut open zombies, the choice is pretty much gone to use it on larger targets.

the game does feel awfully stingy with ammo regardless though. ill have to see how it improves going forward through it.

They touted that starting with Doom 2016 these newest entries would be much more faithful to the original Doom games.

It is supposed to be a Doom game where you shoot stuff, have plenty of ammo and don't have to worry about reloading.

Uhhhh.. not when I play it? Makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong in both iterations. I'm down for more strategic elements, but it's not fun feeling starved ALL of the time.

Yeah, the chainsaw was more tactical, saving it for something important but now it's required too often, Combat just turned into a bunch of micro cutscenes of you cutting and bashing demons all the time...

Yeah it seemed they replaces "reloading" from most games with an even more annoying mechanic of needing to look around for ammo

Is it balanced around the 2v1 invasion mode?Cause that would make sense.

The low ammo cap contradicts the whole reasoning of not having reloading in the game.
