You never had to use it in Doom 1 or 2 either. It was a nice optional weapon.
that doesnt mean that i enjoy it as a gameplay mechanic, however. the chainsaw was something i used against high priority and high threat targets in doom 2016 which generally lead to really cool death cutscenes. now we burn through ammo and just cut open zombies, the choice is pretty much gone to use it on larger targets.
the game does feel awfully stingy with ammo regardless though. ill have to see how it improves going forward through it.
They touted that starting with Doom 2016 these newest entries would be much more faithful to the original Doom games.
It is supposed to be a Doom game where you shoot stuff, have plenty of ammo and don't have to worry about reloading.
Yeah it seemed they replaces "reloading" from most games with an even more annoying mechanic of needing to look around for ammo
