2nd secret encounter on cultist base?

I'm playing on ultra-violence and this secret encounter seems impossible. Either I die or can't put out enough damage to kill the last whiplash before the timer ends. I try to use the explosive mines and grab the armor when I need it, which is almost immediately. I can't imagine how much more impossible this would be on console that I can't help but feel I'm missing something important.

If you really find it that difficult just lower the difficulty. Or keep playing through the game and upgrade your gear.
