Halo didn't change anything either and got worse over time, doom just got better.

It's not what Doom to Quake was in a leap for the genre or even the refresher that Doom 2016 was.
Its an improvement on the current "refresher" formula.
I suppose comparatively like what Doom to Doom 2 was.
Doom was 1993, quake was 1996.
Same time frame as Doom 2016 is to Eternal.
